One time I discovered a crack when candling at day 7. I just put a piece of Scotch tape over it and put it back in the 'bator. I did not have high hopes, but it hatched perfectly!
As long as the chick is completely unattached, and the hen is not freaking out at your presence. On the other hand it doesn't hurt to leave them there either. Imho
Agree. Moderation. I would not add a whole bale. I did add several bales around the bottom of our chicken tractor one winter when we were expecting an arctic blast. Most of the hens were afraid of them and stayed away, but one goofball couldn't stay away and ate so much of it she got sour crop...
I have found my roo, who turned out to be a beast btw, has great value in my flock as a peace keeper. When I introduce new hens to the flock he will intervene for them if the older ones are picking on them, they run to him and if the old nags approach they'll get a peck on the nose! That said; I...
Okay I did update my profile. We are in NoGa. They were only wheezy and rattly in their chest. The one that was the most severe I isolated and medicated also gave VetRx to the whole bunch in the water and a few drops on their necks. Most got over it in about 2 weeks; 1 old girl lingered longer...
Very informative...and depressing. I have no way to know what type of illness my birds had this summer. It appears I need to cull my entire little flock of 9 and start over. They had the resp. Before they were of laying age and only 2 are laying. So their reproductive systems apparently have...
I've seen different things said about respiratory illness and I am wondering, if hens recover and are ever after "carriers" will they lay? Why would you need to cull your flock if you are not planning to sell birds?
Can I add a fan to my Little Giant Still Air Incubator? I had a terrible hatch rate and I think since the newer model has the heating element in the middle instead of going around, moving the air would make a big difference. What do you think?
"I have one of these which I keep all my chickens in, and they are awesome things. The only con about them is sometimes, one or maybe even two of my hens start freaking out."
Do you move it with the chickens in it???? I'm sure they would freak out! Maybe you should let them out so they see what...
Where does one purchase legume hay. I've never seen it at Tractor Supply. They're not laying very well right now, but I attribute that to the construction noise. I'll put a light on a timer. How many hrs a day is healthy for them without overstressing?
The roosts are higher than 6", several levels. Hay is a good idea or what about leaves...abundance of those laying around. They love to scratch around in the leaves! I dont have lighting at the moment. They will be released to free range for several hours each day. They will also have a...
My DH is constructing a great Ch.tractor which has open hardware cloth on underside. With winter coming I'm wondering how to keep their little bustles toasty. We live in GA with fairly mild winters, rare snow, a few ice storms.
Thank you. I thought this was the case especially since they are so physically different. It seems their genetic makeup is not that similar, but what do I know.
