    Mama Red and the cats...

My two cats play rough when they're outside. Today, Mama Red, intervened in what she thought was a fight between the cats. It was hilarious. The cats immediately separated and deferred to my dominant hen. The rest of the afternoon she refereed.

    Let my girls inside today...

What a great story and memory for you! I love my chickens so much I can't stand it. Watching their day to day activities and habits is so interesting to me.

    Let my girls inside today...

That's funny DD! I wish I could spoil my chickens like that! Yes, they are nosy little creatures. When the weather is nice and Jim accidentally leaves the door open, I'll hear a Bwaaaaack (very quite), only to turn around and see my Betty edging her was through the threshold. I'll let her...

Dangit, a hawk just got my banty rooster...

So we ended up cleaning our little roo' and making him into a quite tasty soup. It was my first time with this, but it wasn't so bad. I think I can do the meat-bird thing now, but not with my 4 girls I've raised. They have been my learning experience and I'm too fond of them. Hopefully they...

    Chickens eating/playing with rodents

I just now got back to this thread. Thank you all for the advice! From now on I will let my girls eat their free protein as they wish. I was just worried about diseases and such.

Tell me more about game roosters. I just automatically think mean. I don't want something that I'm afraid of.

Dangit, a hawk just got my banty rooster...

We got the girls into their coop and even got an egg this evening. Such a sad day. He was best friends with our other little banty hen who is the lowest in the pecking order. If I get another rooster, I want it to be a small one. He would attack my ankles during the day, but was more...

Dangit, a hawk just got my banty rooster...

I'm going to miss my little Doodle. He was noisy and a pain in the a** but I loved that guy. Now my girls are cowering in my art studio and I can't get them out. I guess I'll leave them there for awhile until they calm down. Is it possible to cook the rooster? It couldn't have happened but a...

    Let my girls inside today...

I also do the deep litter method. At first I was cleaning my coop every other day. Now I deep litter but make sure the poop board is cleaned and I spot clean the top of the litter a bit before adding more. The coop has never had an odor so I feel I'm doing something right. I have vented...

    Let my girls inside today...

Oh relax folks :) I just let them walk in for a few moments then back out. They are quite cold hearty and have a wonderfully, snug coop. I didn't mean my post to sound as if I had actually moved them in. Just brought them in for a tiny bit of treats and "Mama" time out of the sleet! Thank...

    Chickens eating/playing with rodents

Our cats often catch voles and mice on our property. Today I found one of my hens (they are free range in every sense of the word) pecking at a dead vole. I immediately tossed it far away, but was wondering if this was cause for concern.

Just cuz...") They have a certain time of day where they hunker around our front door. Today was very cold so I let them in by the woodstove for about 20min. They seemed to enjoy it, though my hubby was dubious!

    Egg in my pocket

Fortunately, my egg didn't break so I had it for a snack! My ex-husband left an ink pen in the wash once...what a nightmare.

    Egg in my pocket

I had a large flannel shirt on today, as it's so cold, to gather my eggs and then go shopping. I put one in a breast pocket, forgot about it, and did my shopping in town with egg in tow! It survived all day. I laughed out loud this afternoon as my Mama Red's egg traveled to town and back!
