Ended 11th Annual 2020 New Years Day Hatch-along!

Ended up with 13, 8 are new year's Day babies. For some reason the bantums didn't do well with only 2 of 6 hatching, one pipped (wrong location) and didn't make it, two internal pips and the other couldn't tell.

First seven, another four still fluffing up. One more pipped and a further seven not showing anything yet. Mix of bantums, medium and larger breeds so still optimistic. Happy new year

    Sick/injured hatchling

Still alive and chirpy, slept upright in a chick seat. Toes were curled on both feet so read up on that and used tape to splint them flat, still couldn't stand without falling so have put a cardboard roll behind and Infront(see pic below). She is getting better at Standing, she still Falls a...

    Sick/injured hatchling

Lots of chirping, especially when she sees us and drinks ok when offered. Seems frail however. This hatch we did bantams so much smaller than our previous ones. We have made a little chair so she isn't slumped over. Fingers crossed she is looking better in the morning. Hopefully she looks...

    Sick/injured hatchling

We just hatched some chicks under a broody hen, we have previously used an incubator. Postman was very rough with the box and hatch rate was terrible. We have two healthy chicks with mum and a third hatched this morning, found it in the laying box abandoned I think, it was half covered and had...

    Broody and Incubator eggs/chicks integration

We are hatching 12 eggs that were posted. They were pretty poorly handled with the postman swinging the box as he walked to the house. We put half in the incubator and half under a broody hen as we thought 12 would be too many for her (never used a broody before) and she had been broody for a...

    Dog attack, with picture

Thanks for the replies. Wyorp Rock the wound there was ~3cm deep, if I could take a photo of the whole wound it was about twice the size of the photo as it came across the other side of her rump/backside. I believe the kidney lies beneath that area? I couldn't see any tissue damage other than...

    Dog attack, with picture

Hello, Long story, on short father in law came over while I was at work with his dog which has attacked our barred rock. The chicken is now safe in the coop/small run, mainly hiding in the corner. She did walk around a when I came in there and didn't seem obviously distressed/unwell. Given...

    Chicken having trouble fitting in

The exbroody is the one now suffering. Didn't let her hatch, no too and don't need/want more. Thanks I'll try your tips. Has been happening while full access to the yard so lots of room and hiding places. Any comments on one more to make a flock of 4? I should add we lost a rock and replaced...

    Chicken having trouble fitting in

Long story short. We have a small flock of 3, lost one to a fox and got a new girl. Things were as you'd expect for a couple of weeks and everything seemed fine. All of a sudden the new girl (plymouth rock) is been kept away/picked on by the Araucana who never paid much attention when...

How much fighting is normal when introducing

The new plymouth rock one is happy to stand down, she just runs away. Only the one of the existing two - the Ancona - is trying to be dominant, the noise of any fighting scares the Araucana and she runs away too! They are doing pretty well, the rock gets within a few feet before the Ancona...

How much fighting is normal when introducing

They all returned there last night. The new chicken was sleeping on the floor so I lifted her up and put her on a perch. About 2 sqm (~20 sq feet) from memory. My existing 2 are almost 2.5 years and the new chicken is almost 1 year old. The one year old came from a larger flock of about...

How much fighting is normal when introducing

Good to know. They are just staying apart with all the space. Wondering if there is a point where I place them in a smaller area together (a few weeks time?) Was thinking the new comer and the araucana who hasn't shown any aggression might mingle in a small space while I separate the relatively...

How much fighting is normal when introducing

They are all free ranging together today. So much space for only three chickens I don't think it matters, the new girl is staying away so haven't seen how they get along together. Would like to see them all together, guess these things take time. I am guessing it is all a little different with...
