At a park with my kids that we don't frequent super often. Has a little manmade lake, etc. Since we were last here, probably 2 wks ago, a new batch of spring ducks has been ditched here. 4 Peking, looks like a Blue Swed, and a couple Rouen. Gorgeous young birds. Then, a smallish Muscovy...
My 1 yr old WH went broody 7wks or so ago. I have no drakes, and she stopped laying once she went broody....sitting on NOTHING. I take the girls eggs every morning. She had been sitting on absolutely nothing for nearly 2 months now and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. How in the world...
What's the dosage for ducks? Reading tons of threads with dosing for chickens and geese, and people adding as a side note that they treat their ducks as well but having difficulty finding a thread with that specifically addresses duck dosage. Thanks!
My girls (Cayuga and a WH) hatched April 25th and had hoped they'd start laying before winter but not an egg in sight. Anyone with same or close hatch date getting eggs?
Fiona is 11 wks today and boy is she LOUD! She quacks if she hears my voice, senses my presence, or wants goodies. We went with Cayuga because they are supposed to get a quitter breed....and this was true up until a week ago. Physically she shows no signs of illness, she gets along swimmingly...
I live in Central Calif, it gets extremely hot here and currently we're up to 97.....starting Sunday on 104, 108, etc.
How do your ducks do in extreme heat? The girls are in an outdoor pen 11'x11', shade cloth on the to and areas where I use a thin sheet moved throughout the day to provide...
Noticed this afternoon that Dolly, 7 wk WH, has broken the nail on her back toe. Sorry for the cruddy pic but give you an idea of the situation
It's torn and bent inward. Now I have read if it is still attached to remove it with clippers but there is significant resistance. It's not just...
Hi all, we've built a 10'x10'x6' duck pen for our two young girls out of 1 1/2" PVC. Frame is complete. Bottom 3' will be 1" hardware cloth, the rest, 1" chicken wire.
We have no raccoon, possum, but do have neighborhood cats, rats/mice, the occasional hawk and occasional owl.
Roof will...
I've read several posts on here of people conditioning their ducks with treats....i.e. Feeding mealworms while petting, exposing to new things, etc.
My question is, how do you do that safely if they need water to help swallow their food?
Example, if I'm trying to get the ducklings used to...
Ok, after a harrowing ordeal of delays and drama our Cayuga and WH girls arrived yesterday afternoon. Cayuga looked a little worse for the wear but both eating and drinking like champs.
Last night, ceramic heat emitter crapped out and the girls were in a 69 dg brooder for 3-4 hrs. Still...
Completely new to ducks and have 2 ducklings arriving approx April 26. I intend to use a storage bin as a brooder initially. My question is, if my house's ambient temp ranges from 70-75 dg, what wattage bulb would I use? If my goal is to give them an area that is 90 dg, that's only a 20 dg...
Hi all, new to BYC and new to ducks! I'm a clinical psychologist and mom to two special needs girls, 7 & 9. We are looking to get 3 ducklings from Metzer in April....2 ducks, 1 drake. Not looking to hatch, but eggs would be nice and the male to female ration seems prudent given my research...
