Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

I am in love with this breed so I hope both are female! They are so pretty but they also seem a lot more calm than I expected. From their size and look, I was expecting a very flighty crazy bird, but they are pretty mellow.

Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

Here is a better body picture. It is hard to take pictures of birds that keep moving!

Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

I am concerned by the pointyness of the neck feathers and the draping of the feathers just in front of the tail feathers (saddle feathers?). Is that normal for a hen? My welsummer hen has pointy neck feathers too, so maybe that is just some breeds?

    Langshan Gender 6 weeks old

Update at 9 weeks (ignore the grey one standing on the warmer in the first picture, she is an opal legbar).

Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

I tried to get pictures, but didn't do so good. Here is an update at 9 weeks! I am not sure, but it might be the same bird in the foreground. They look too much alike :(

    Coccidisosis deaths in chicks

I sold some 4 week old chicks to someone and after two weeks, most of them came down with coccidiosis and died. Adult chickens in the same coop also died from coccidiosis. The buyer told me that the adults ate some bloody poop from the chicks and that is how they got it from the chicks. She...

Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

Did you notice any behavior differences before the physical ones?

Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

I will update in a few weeks. Currently I am thinking of keeping both of them even though I only intended to keep one. Even when there were 10 more chicks in with them, these two always formed a little sub-tribe together and I would hate to break them up. The downside is that I am going to...

Gender for Appenzeller Spitzhauben 6 week old

Is it too early to tell the gender on my Appenzeller Spitzhaubens? I have two chicks that were hatched about 6 weeks ago. Chick A: Chick B Not sure which one this is! They move around and then I can't tell them apart

    Chicken walking problems

I have a chick that always seemed to want to sit down and was very docile. Now that it is older (6 weeks) it definitely walks differently and will hobble just enough to eat and then lay back down. Could people take a look at video of it walking and let me know what you think? I am not that...

    Broody hen: incubate eggs first?

I do not monitor my coop during the day. I caught her off the nest once last weekend because all the chickens were in an uproar as they were chasing her around and she was upset and shrieking. Other than that, I have no idea where she goes when! She is always sitting in the same nest box when...

    Broody hen: incubate eggs first?

Also, should they be warmed in an incubator before putting them under her so that they feel warm and "comfortable"? Just to help her stay on them and not be too disturbed. She is crazy sensitive right now and any interaction makes her freak, so I want her to have the least amount of disturbance.

    Broody hen: incubate eggs first?

I have a broody hen that I will be placing fertile eggs under tonight or tomorrow night. Should the eggs be incubated to "start them" first or should I just stick them under her? They are shipped eggs, so there will be a few guaranteed that have problems. I just did a batch from this egg...

Maryland: Opal Legbar Male Chick - 1day old

I originally thought my incubator was the culprit, but I did a mixed hatch with 6 different breeds from a different supplier (all are shipped eggs) and that batch turned out great! So it might be that the shipment route between the opal legbar breeder and my house is just too bumpy for shipped...

Maryland: Opal Legbar Male Chick - 1day old

Well, sadly this hatch doesn't look to be going much better. The eggs are slowly dying off one by one :( I am now down to 2 that have movement in them with lockdown starting.

    Broody hen enclosure

I like the idea of the divider in the coop while she is brooding. That way she is comfortable where she is. I think once the chicks come that won't work as they all will want to move around more. So maybe I will rig up chicken wire and food and water for her for the next few weeks inside and...

    Broody hen enclosure

Does anyone have some pictures or ideas for a good broody hen enclosure? I might be able to place it in my chicken run if it isn't too large so she has a safe space and thus won't need to go too crazy with predator proofing. I was going to have her just stay with the other chickens, but when...
