    Spring Chicks!

Kinda restarting our clock after a really bad year of varying difficulties. These are our new "girls." Three leghorn and one each ameraucana, french maran and wyandotte. These three were straight runs from TSC so we shall have to wait and see of they get to stay...and if they are what they were...

Anyone seen an egg like this?

She's only about a year old and first started laying last summer. She hasnt molted yet. Btw...since posting I'm now pretty sure it is my copper Maran doing this.

Anyone seen an egg like this?

A brown egg layer left this for me. What does it mean, if anything?

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Those are interesting for a bcm. Never seen speckled quite that big. My bcm lays dark brown eggs with almost imperceptible specks. Anyway...it is a pretty assortment. P.s. actually the darker one in my picture above is from our bcm.

Oh I'm happy with her anyway. Just surprised. Lol

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

She has a yellowish color around her neck like the leghorn does...does white rock have that? If so then I think that's a fit.

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

So, I have a conundrum. Louise was in the nesting box this morning. After she got out I found this brown egg. Now...she was sold to me as a white leghorn. She looks like Chickaletta except her comb and wattle are smaller and her tail is more rounded and fluffy whereas Chickaletta's is straight...

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Such a nice collection of eggs...Chickaletta is the larger white one. :)

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

My first bird to lay did so while perched on a roost about three feet above the floor of the coop. It landed on a bare spot in the floor but didn't break. I think they are a little more resilient than store eggs. :)

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

I was thinking that. It is weird bc she barely has comb development. Then again, neither did Mary. I will have to find them in the box before the egg to be sure. Chickaletta (leghorn) was very active this evening after dark in the coop. She was walking around between the nesting boxes. At...

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Correction! Della started today with this light tan colored egg in the corner. Not sure who layed the brown one. So, not sure about the brown one in the foreground. I have a welsummer but it seems too light. An I have an ISA Brown I think but she's younger. Thoughts?

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

I put two ceramics each back in the boxes and found a nice, clean, brown egg this morning. :) Strangely though I found Della back in the nesting box several hours later. So maybe someone else started early. We shall see...

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

I'm going to attribute this one to Della since she is the only brown egg layer who's almost overdue. I removed the ceramic eggs from the nesting boxes day before yesterday and found this one in the run this morning. Maybe they weren't quite fully trained after all.

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Anyone ever seen this before? The crease in the shell? It's probably a double yolk but never saw it like this before.

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Pretty sure Mary gave me two yolks in this one. She almost doubled in size overnight! I have two hens turning 26 weeks this week. I'm starting to tell them "eggs or meat, the choice is yours." Lol Thinking about getting into quail.

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

The hens did all the work. They are pretty aren't they!? I can't wait for my Leghorns and other brown layers to start. Each of the brown layers should be a different shade. Then the white from the Leghorns and Mary's teal. It'll be a very attractive assortment. :D

Whatcha doin' with all those eggs?

So, with three birds laying, we are coming up with uses for them. Tonight we made the best buttermilk pancakes I've ever had. What do you do?

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Pretty sure it's Maranda. Today's was darker than yesterday's. Eggs for breakfast tomorrow!
