Hen fell asleep in the nesting box!

She'd definitely having the same symptoms as your chickens. Our coop is about 24 square feet and 4 feet in height. We have a larger dog crate, but i don't think it'll fit well inside. I'd also prefer not to use a dog crate, because we use them in the house and to be honest chickens can be very...

Hen fell asleep in the nesting box!

So our chicken is hanging out in the nesting box again.. We went out of town for 2 weeks and the neighbors were taking care of the hens. They started noticing the chicken sitting on the eggs for about 2-3 day straight, every time they went to collect eggs. Generally we let them free range, so...

Hen fell asleep in the nesting box!

Interesting. This is the first time it's happened, and she normally doesn't guard her eggs. I picked her up and put her on the roost as soon as I saw her sleeping in the nesting box. I figured it was because she laid so close to dusk. We will keep an eye on her though.

Hen fell asleep in the nesting box!

We have 4 hens, 2 rhode island reds, 1 ameraucana, and 1 black copper maran. One day, at dusk, I was closing the hens into the coop and I saw the black copper maran in the process of laying in the nesting box. I figured since she was already in the coop I'd close the hens in and come back to...

What goes in the bottom of the nesting box?

We had a problem with the eggs breaking. I think this was due to the chickens being new layers and the hard wooden floor of the nesting box. The egg shells have become more dense now, but before then we used some left over carpet. We cut them into squares using a box cutter and placed them in...

Review by '' on item 'Little Giant 3 Gallon Waterer With Metal Handle'

I would spend the extra money for a better waterer. The water sometimes doesn't flow freely. You end up having to tip the waterer every couple days or so to refill the water basin at the bottom. If you don't tighten the water tray properly, you will end up with 3 gallons of water either in...

    Atlanta, Georgia Urban Chicken Coop!

Hi everyone! My wife and I purchased a home approximately 2 miles away from the downtown Atlanta Capitol in the Grant Park area. A couple friend of ours live in the same neighborhood and their house came with a chicken coop. We were completely shocked at the fact that backyard chickens is a...

    Freezing water

Is there anything we can put in the water besides salt to lower the freezing temperature of the water? I'm too scared of fires to have a light bulb in the coop. Ours isn't built for electricity.
