Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

I got so nostalgic when I got the message to check in. My story isn’t as happy though. It has been a little over 3 years since we had chickens. Our HOA at the time decided to throw a fit about our chickens…long story and I think I posted about it. Can’t remember now but we were allowed to have...

    Another pruning question

I was all ready to prune my fruit trees, but we have had a very warm winter. I am hesitant to prune because every time it gets “cold” (barely at freezing overnight), it goes back up in the 50s. The trees already have new buds growing on them! So, any advice? The pear trees desperately need...

Had to rehome chickens due to HOA change

We won’t do it, but the thought crossed our mind to “dispose” of a bunch of the poison ivy that we have growing around our property onto the flower garden by their mailbox. Lol. Or throw a bunch of dandelion seeds into their nicely manicured half acre front yard.

Had to rehome chickens due to HOA change

When we move, we will be looking for an area with no HOA at all. It is incredibly hard to find areas with no zoning at all here, and even rural areas are subdivided.

Had to rehome chickens due to HOA change

Yup. This neighborhood is becoming a “rich” neighborhood apparently. My neighbor who had chickens is also looking to move. She said that when they moved here 20 years ago it was mostly working class people who actually used their 4-5 acre plots. There has been a lot of turnover since then and...

Had to rehome chickens due to HOA change

At least I rehomed the remaining chickens to a good home. It was a young couple who were trying to start a homesteading adventure. They already have ducks, rabbits, and goats, and had been wanting chickens but couldn’t afford to get the coop and run yet. I gave them the coop and run and all my...

Looking for BlackBerry Bushes WITH THORNS

I may try that with one of them. Most of them are sprawling and cover a good 4 ft squared area.

Had to rehome chickens due to HOA change

Let’s just say the dog owner has money and connections to higher ups in the community. Plus the HOA president is a lawyer. I talked to a friend who is a lawyer and he said it wouldn’t be worth it...they would win. We don’t have the money to pursue it.

Looking for BlackBerry Bushes WITH THORNS

Ours are wild in the woods. I think If I covered them, the wild critters may get tangled in the netting

Looking for BlackBerry Bushes WITH THORNS

I was so excited to find wild blueberry bushes when we moved here but the birds get them before they even ripen!

    Garden thread

My daughter is really wanting to help garden this year (she is 12), and she wants to plant peanuts. I have never even been around peanut plants so I have no idea what to expect with that.

Looking for BlackBerry Bushes WITH THORNS

I don’t have enough blackberry bushes for people to steal from. Lol. We had about half an acre of them, but honeysuckle took over last year and choked them out. We used a bush hog and cleared out most of it, leaving about 6 bushes. I plan on pulling up as much honeysuckle as I can find.

Looking for BlackBerry Bushes WITH THORNS

The deer and birds clear our wild blackberries out if we don’t get to them as soon as they are ripe!

    Garden thread

I will join! I am going through seed catalogs right now. Our soil by the house is mostly clay, and I have done container gardening so far. Last year we planted too late, due to a freak April snowstorm and weirdly cool spring weather, and many of our plants never produced. This year we are...

Had to rehome chickens due to HOA change

I am not going into the whole story, but I posted quite a while back about how a neighbor’s dog broke our run and killed a chicken. We worked with animal control and their dog eventually got taken after several repeat attempts. The neighbor got their dog back (paid a fine) but retaliated with...

    Advice on Luffa gourds

I had planned on growing luffa, but our wacky spring with late frosts changed my mind. It would have been too late to plant them, so I still have the seeds. I watched a bunch of tutorials, and almost all said to leave them to dry on the vine for sponges. Sorry, I know nothing else. Were you...

    Squirrels !!

We have a lot of squirrels, but our cats chase them away from the yard. They never catch them, but they sure try. I did not know they would steal eggs!

    First snake

He is big. Lol. I am not scared of non-venomous snakes. I did put on some heavy gardening gloves so I wouldn't get the scent on me. Those things are stinky! He actually wad fairly calm. My neighbor's kids came over and helped hold him while I cut off the netting.

    First snake

Good to know. We only have 6 acres, but it is fairly rough terrain (hillside, steep bluffs, etc.) Our house is at the top of the incline, so I was hoping releasing him at the bottom, near the river would keep him down there. There are lots of voles and other tasty critters down there. I don't...

    First snake

I found the first snake in the chicken run. Actually he was tangled in the bird netting I had over the run, and on a tree branch. It was a rat snake, so I cut down part of the netting and cut him free. I am keeping him in a tub with a screen over the top until my daughter gets home from school...
