Review by 'Ladies of the Forest' in article '10 Health Precautions For Backyard Chicken Owners'

This covers a lot of the basic precautions for keeping chickens. Great job! I would only add that goggles are very helpful for keeping dust (especially chicken poop contaminated dust) out of your eyes. Not only do they make a barrier to roaming dust, but they’ll keep you from accidentally...

I brought Lily, the Guinea Hen, in to warm up in a particularly cold day. I’d never noticed that we look a little alike!

When did your earliest hen lay?

ASA Browns and Midnights Marans both shocked me and started laying at 4 months! They were born in April and started laying in august! And they’re the sweetest little girls!🐣🐥

Official BYC Poll: How do you name your pet chickens?

My first 3 were Winken, Blinken and Nod. As soon as I got to know these 3 gals, Nod became Naughty because she was so bold. My favorite bird. Now I have added Scarlet and Sadie, my redheads. And Onyx and Jade and Orchid, my beautiful black marans who shine green. And there’s Meredith and...

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Keep Your Coop Smelling Fresh?

Plywood with linoleum works so well in my coop! I have to replace the linoleum every couple of years, but it’s well worth the price to keep the plywood clean, and the coop not stinky.

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Keep Your Coop Smelling Fresh?

Hi, everybody! I keep my coop fresh using mugwort and lavender that grow with wild abandon in my yard. Every morning I take the hoe to the coop, moving all the spikes litter around into the clean litter, and every couple of weeks I throw in some lavender and mugwort. I dry some for the winter...

I have lost 10 chickens in 4 years

Just a quick question: how can you tell they “had cancer”? Was there a post-mortem done on each bird? I’m wondering if they might be eating something poisonous on their free-range walks? Chickens are really smart about what-not-to-eat, but mistakes can happen, too. I’m so sorry for all of your...

    Reconsidering my chicken dreams....

I’m almost 68 and have 14 chickens. I get so much more than I give, when it comes to my birds. I use the DLM, so the coops are odor-free and easy to maintain. The water hauling was killing my back, but I finally got smarter than the problem and got a longer hose that reaches the coops, instead...

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Keep Your Coop Smelling Fresh?

I love my odor-free coop! I have mint and lavender growing around the perimeter, so the outside smells nice. For inside, I use hemp litter and stir it up every day. I add more hemp, just a couple of cups at a time, about every two weeks, or so. It still doesn’t stink then, but it seems to keep...

    Run Height

I got out of putting up 6’ of hardware cloth, and all that work with unyielding steel. My hardware cloth only comes up to about 4’, then I put a few shepherds hooks in the run before I threw on the bird netting. I can walk all over inside, it’s about 6’ high throughout the run, and I saved a ton...

Comment by 'Ladies of the Forest' in article 'Rooster Flocks'

I wish it was just a space problem. We’ve added the second coop, and they’re still at it. I’ve put food in about 8 different places, water in 3 different places, and added safety spaces. I have hope that this will resolve itself. I appreciate all of the great advice. Stay safe

Comment by 'Ladies of the Forest' in article 'Rooster Flocks'

This is great! Exactly what I’ve had to do because I have way too many roos. But they’re all sweethearts and gentle with humans and dogs, but have decided to battle non-stop this spring. I’ve got two coops and two pens. It’s working out well. I still keep trying to put them back together because...
