Hello. I live in Austin, Texas with my sweetheart, Giles, and our 3 large dogs (all from rescue): Asher, a very large, sable German Shepherd; Bella a smallish (only about 80 lbs.) Anatolian Shepherd mix; and, Lily, the little pistol, Anatolian Shepherd. We are just starting our life with...

    Comb Injury or Fowl Pox??

I appreciate the quick responses. Of course the day this showed up, a post on the local chicken group list said someone on the north side of Austin has fowl pox in their flock. So, I worried.

    Comb Injury or Fowl Pox??

This is the only hen with a mark on her comb, but since this is my first flock, I don't know if it is just an injury, or could be fowl pox. There was not any white or lighter colored spots first, This showed up full size over night.

    Oh no! Mysterious Chicken Death

I just heard a big squawk and a bump and ran down to my little hen house. One of my 20 week old pullets was lying on her back on just outside the door of the coop, dead. I only have (had!) 7 and I visit them several times a day and nothing has seemed to be a problem. Is it even possible she...

14 wk SLWs - Genders please! Pic Heavy

Here are my 14 week old GLW's. Buttercup is definitely a boy and has been crowing for about a week already. There's Buttercup in his fine form and the next with Daisy, same age. I'm sad I'll have to rehome him asap. --S

    Rats

Just putting feed away won't get rid of rats. It's obviously a great idea, but won't guarantee no rats. We had some under the house before the chickens ever came. Rats can't get into my feed or coop. It's completely surrounded by 1/2 x 1 wire or smaller. And there are no signs e.g. rat poop...

Are Wyandottes (Silver laced) typically aggressive birds?

No long history here either but I have three 12-week old Wyandottes from hatchery stock. Two are GLW's and one is a blue. - One of the GLW's is my favorite, the most calm when I pick her up. (I try to pick up each of my eight at least once every few days.) She is also the most likely to...

Owww! Little Dinosaur Pecked My Eye!

The eye doc says it's not too bad and will call in a prescription for antibiotic eye cream if it gets goopy. Whew. I keep a pretty good eye out (pun intended) if I'm holding one, so they can't get too close to my eyes. Yeah, she snuck it in when I was messing with a different chicken. I...

Owww! Little Dinosaur Pecked My Eye!

I had read that they might do this, seeing the shiny part, but YIKES, it's kinda scary. I was bent over messing with another chicken, when one of the Dominiques pecked my eye. She caught the lower lid at the outer corner and feels like she scratched the sclera (white part), too. I'm afraid of...

Whats The Strangest Things Your Chickens Have Ever Eaten???

I know it's more 'normal' than 'weird', but it creeps me out when my pullets (none older than 12 weeks) grab up feathers and try to swallow them. They get the soft end down their throats but hard part of the shaft is a couple of inches long. They push it against the ground trying to get it...

    Help Me Paint My Coop!

I was thinking about doing vines and roses on the side of mine. The trim color is the same as the trim on my house (leftover from the house paint and makes it look good). Maybe a chicken-y quote.

    Roosting for the night

I moved 8 chicks into the new coop/run with no adults. Two of them were 8 weeks old and 6 of them were 6 weeks old. The little peeps slept in their brooder box the first 2-3 nights (I put the brooder inside the coop and put them 'to bed' each night.) The two older ones went immediately to...

    money's tight... out of feed

There are also online 'freecycle' groups around the country. I'm on the one here in Austin and there is tons of activity. People that hate to see things thrown out that others can use as well as people that need them post on a site - sorta like craigslist but everything must be free.

Livestock Guardian Breed Dogs Available for Adoption.

Keep in touch with them. I'm sure she told you they try to foster the dogs if there is not an immediate adopt. The foster people can then give you more idea of personality. Sometimes with the rescue dogs, you just put out there what is really important to you in a match and then that dog...

Livestock Guardian Breed Dogs Available for Adoption.

That's about the space I have. Your best bet is to go ahead and contact the rescue folks (NASRN - National Anatolian Shepherd Rescue) through the website. They are happy to help figure out if it is a good fit.

Livestock Guardian Breed Dogs Available for Adoption.

They do well in large space, but fine in medium. I'd hate for someone who would be a great match to be turned off by their size. I have less than 1/2 acre and only part of that fenced - they are not showing any signs of lack of exercise or space.

    top 5 breeds of dogs

True - Mine pretty much have the territory of our large fenced yard, but when we have them on our regular walking route, they definitely want to act like it's part of the territory. Anatolians (aka Kangals) the breed that are used by the Cheetah Conservancy in an interesting way...
