Keeping siblings - should I swap roos for unrelated roosters?

Hi, we are increasing our flock and thus have new chicks. Of course, however, we have hens and roosters who are siblings (at least half-siblings since we only have 2 roosters) Can my new/bigger flock be composed of these chicks or should I trade the baby roosters with someone so to not have...

There are also so many roosters available through Petfinder! But it seems like you have enough options through here too!

How do I make my chicken like me?

We also got ours used to a particular sound - anything you like - chick-chick-chick or like someone said tututututu. In our case, making the sound and just talking to them really helped. We have also noticed they do not like hats, helmets or sunglasses... colorful accessories seem to freak...

Heart breaking day on the farm...

I am so sorry for your loss... very sad.. I must however agree that it is not the dog's "fault" - many have hunting instinct and will chase/kill birds especially after the frenzied scattering starts... In our own farm we have 2 dogs that cannot be out of the kennel when the chickens are...

When can my broody hen be loose in the coop/run with her chicks?

Hi Kham, My hen was in a crate with the chicks inside the coop. At one week old, it was clear she was desperate to take them out. In our case, the coop is at an inclined area and the ramp is 18-20” high, but the coop’s “human door” on the other is only 12” from the ground. I opened that door...

Little one with spraddle leg very weak

Not that I could tell, but I guess it could have been... I welcome any thoughts so I don’t feel as helpless in the future... if it were, what would it possibly be an indication of please? I don’t mind hypothetical thoughts now, I just want to lean...!! thanks!!

Little one with spraddle leg very weak

Oh, it’s ok, I know people are busy. But I really app We were just trying so hard but our little one died that night. 4 days old, I think. The one thing that I looked everywhere and could not find help with was the swelling on the knee (if you can help, I would love to know what to do in the...

Little one with spraddle leg very weak

Hi, we have a chick we have been trying everything for - leg bindings, electrolytes, physical therapy... it is happy and chirps when we pick it up but so much weaker than siblings now (4 days old.) it opens and closes its beak... any ideas!?!? (I have short videos but I guess I can only...

Chick with leg binding (spraddle) - how to reduce swelling at [one] knee

Hi everyone, We have a 2 day old chick that has bindings since yesterday due to Achilles tendon and/or spraddle leg (we continue to investigate/treat, but we are not very experienced at this.) We are confident the binding is NOT too tight, but this chick has developed swelling on one knee...

What's your opinion on free range quail

We have a coop low to the ground and an attached run - that's the closest to free range that I have managed. They do go into the "coop area" at night, but if they escape the run (they have a couple of times when I messed up), they are gone...! We wired the bottom of the run so that we move it...

Are Winter eggs fertile when using artificial/supplemental light?

Hi everyone! We have 18 hens and two very active roosters , so fertility for incubation here is very high at the moment! My question is: we have a coop setup with light and heat (if we want these features on) and we were hoping to extend the egg laying a bit into Winter - would those...

When can my broody hen be loose in the coop/run with her chicks?

Hi everyone!! I just thought I would provide one little update: they made it up the ramp today!! :wee However.... they first tried to hunk down under the coop again and I "nudged" them out with a long pole. Every time they went under, I would "annoy" momma and get her to move out. I...

When can my broody hen be loose in the coop/run with her chicks?

Oh, and I have a nice big run (something like 40' by 30') with natural shrubs and lots for them to explore!! (But it is not predator proof...!) It was so nice to see them exploring today!! We've raised chicks before, but how nice to experience the joy of watching them interact with momma...
