    De-spurring roosters

I could use some advice regarding the question of de-spurring my Roo. We have a beautiful 3 year old, 14 Lb Buff Cochin Rooster who proves his worth on a daily basis. He's an amazing protector and is good to his girls. Last summer, I had the flock out of their run to get some yard time while...

    Biosecurity: Avian Influenza

Hello all. Not sure if a thread already exists on this topic, but it appears this avian flu is going to be bad. Does anyone have any suggestions on biosecurity where our backyard flocks are concerned? I have 20 chickens in 2 separate coops with 25x50 enclosed roofed runs. Last I checked, we...

    Cochin pullets laying early?

Hello all. So we have a new batch of cochin pullets we ordered from McMurray's. They hatched in mid-June and are now roughly 5 1/2 months old. They are still in our garage as they are still not quite ready to be introduced to the big kids. We began finding eggs about a month ago which would...

    Broody Hen Question

I have a Buff Cochin hen who has gone broody for the first time. The problem is, she has chosen a place in the run to drop her eggs and she doesn't want to go in at night. I have 4 nesting boxes available inside the coop. I picked her and her eggs up and let her see me put them into a box...

    New chicks...one has no eyes...horrific

Has anyone ever heard of this? We received our chicks from McMurray's yesterday. All are healthy and doing fine but one of the Partridge Cochins appears not to have any eyes. One looks like an empty socket and the other appears to be a large and white bump. There are no injuries that would...

    Aggressive Mom

So our Lav Orpington hatched out 9 chicks and was a model mother for a month. Now, she has become aggressive toward them and chases them away from her. Is this normal behavior? I get that she is probably ready to send them on their way and get back to her life...but she's kinda mena to them.

    Bizarre Chick Behavior?

So our Lav Orp went broody about 2 months ago. She hatched out 9 chicks and has been raising them now for almost a month. I put them into their own little coop and pen adjacent to the big flock. They all get to free range the yard together during the day. Everyone gets along swimmingly. So...

    Possible Hatching Emergency...advice needed.

Hello. First-timer here. We allowed our Lavender Orpington to go broody. She's been sitting on 15 eggs for about 24 days now. 8 have hatched without a problem...7 remain. We are in the midst of a real cold spell here in upstate NY and the temp is going to get into the low teens. We worried...

Attn Cochin People: Confused Rooster, hermaphrodite or what?

So we ordered a male and female Patridge Cochin from Mcmurray's last summer. Paid extra for sexing so assumed we'd have a mating pair at some point. As they grew. we could see little difference in their plummage. Now, 5 months old, we clearly have 2 roosters...or do we? One has grown an...

    Mystery illness

Hello all. We've been dealing with a perplexing problem for the past two weeks. I'd be greatly appreciative if any chicken gurus might share some theories/guidance. It's a bit long, but necessary to get all the details. Please be patient. Here's the history. 12 week old Ameraucana pullet...

    Old-timer sexing trick

Hello all. First post. I have a few memories of my Great Gramma Mamie from when I was a kid in the late 60s. I remember seeing her flipping chicks onto their backs and I asked her what she was doing. She said she was seeing how many roosters and hens she had. She demonstrated... In one...
