Hey Bucky,
They are at freezer camp. Finally!! I won't be raising Kosher Kings again. I might try one of the other breeds Noll's carries, but no more KK's for me.
Out of the 52 chicks only 40 made it to butchering day. I lost a couple to predators and 1 to an unfortunate squashing when...
My Chicken Saga
After a visit to my parents (who own a dozen and a half chickens) over the Christmas holidays I decided it would be fun to have a few chickens at our house too. My husband loves eggs, and my nieces and nephews really enjoy "taking care of" the chickens. Plus I'd just lost my...
Barn Style Coop w/Storage
The mostly finished project. Is it ever really done??
I would like to include the original plans I drew up for the coop, but my husband left them outside and they got rained on, tromped on, and then finally thrown away. *sigh* But considering he's worked his tail...
We have a 10 x 10 pen that is covered with a tarp on top and 2 sides that I lock them in at night, and they have free access to it during the day because their feeders are in there. I also put short roosts in the pen so they can sleep off the ground if they so choose. About 2/3 of them sleep on...
No updated weights, but I thought I'd post some pictures. I'm hoping I can weigh them tomorrow, but given our busy weekends, I'm not holding my breath...
So far I've lost 5 KK's, so I'm down to 47 birds, but I think the loss of birds has more to do with our wretched weather than the lack of...

My folks live in SE Mo. They have to pay personal property tax too, but their real property taxes are super cheap so I guess the county has to find other ways to raise needed funds.
These guys came from Noll's. He didn't seem to have any trouble shipping them to Texas, and Arizona's only one state away. However, if the weather is colder, and now that US shipping times for first class mail will increase, it may be more of an issue to get him to ship further away.
So I weighed the KK's today for the first time in 2.5 weeks. It's impossible to weigh them during the week because of the short length of daylight hours, and our weekends here lately are so busy that weighing meat chickens isn't a very high priority.
Here are this week's weights:
Hi - 67.9...
I hope I don't get in trouble for spamming the board since I already posted this over in coop design, but I'm so excited I had to share it here too!
My crafty friend gave me this sign today when I got to work. She recently started making and selling signs with letters cut out of old license...
My crafty friend recently started making and selling signs with letters cut out of old license plates. My husband and I had some scrap wood at our house that I gave to her. As a thank you she made me this sign for my chicken coop. I LOVE it!! (The picture I took with my old 3GS just doesn't...
Actually the price I paid per chick was $1. With shipping the total cost for each bird was $1.51. My FR's cost $2/bird with shipping. We processed the FR's at 9.5 weeks. We probably won't be able to process these chicks til 11 or 12 weeks old. The 49 cents savings per chick won't make up...
