    First night in the coop!

I just went through the same thing with my chicks last night. I almost felt guilty putting them on their roost because they seemed freaked out and I was scared that they wouldn’t know how to get down in the morning or try to get down in the dark. As it turned out, they did great. I hope you had...

    Out to the coop

I hadn’t thought of that. They did spend days in the run for about a week, right next to the entrance of the coop. Yesterday, I sat on the run side and opened the door to the coop side and just fed them some mash through the door. I hope that helps them get familiar with the door.

    Out to the coop

I went away for the weekend and came home to chicks that had to go to their coop - immediately. I knew it was time but wanted to be home when they moved out. Over the three days that I was gone, they grew so much that I knew I couldn’t wait any longer. At 5 weeks of age, out they went. They...

    names- you decide!

Am I a terrible chicken mother? I have seven chicks (my first) that I've had for a month now and still haven't figured out names for them. I lost one on day three and she had a name - I think because I was treating her and spending lots of time with her. But the rest - I come up with names but...

    Moving chicks to coop questions

No, I may try meat birds later but for my first attempt, I went for layers.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

Okay, I have two more questions. 1). Do they all tend to groom before they settle down to nap? I notice they will all start to groom themselves at the same time - just curious. 2). Can chicks overeat? I leave feed out all day, give them fresh water each day and they get treats twice a day. In...

    Moving chicks to coop questions

I worry about sudden, unexpected weather - like short but heavy rainstorms. But yes, they seem to be pretty comfortable in the weather outside.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

I have a tendency to overthink things and I just don’t want things to go wrong. I lost one girl in the first few days and I just want the remaining girls to stay healthy and happy. So far, they do seem to be doing really well.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

There are nest boxes on one side and there are three roosting bars on the other side.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

Great idea. I mentioned this to hubby and he suggested a small dog house that was here when we bought the house. I knew I’d get good ideas here. Thanks!

    Moving chicks to coop questions

I have two coops. This is the one we’ll use for these 7 girls. The second one is smaller and will be used for bantams at a later time. There are two dog runs - one attached to each coop, with a door between the two.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

The run is pretty large but only part of it is covered so for now, I’m keeping their explorations to that area. I like the idea of giving them a brooder in the bottom of their coop until they can easily climb up to the 2nd story.

How cute - all lined up on their roost.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

These are my first chicks so I’m a real newbie. Each step of this process is new to me; Hence the many questions. A huddle box - that’s an interesting idea that I’m off to think about.

    Moving chicks to coop questions

I’m a new chicken mom and I have questions. My chicks are four weeks today and they are getting too big for their brooder. They no longer sleep under the heater and are testing their wings all the time, which creates chaos. I have started taking them down to their future run in the mornings and...

Is it wrong to feed my 7wk old chicks their feed moistened in the morning

This may be a dumb question but what is the difference between mash and fermented mash. I feed my chicks (three weeks) mash every day from my hand as a treat so they get used to being around me. This helps me pick them up and hold/inspect them. One time, I put the mash in a sealed container and...

    Curved Beak

Thanks. I will keep an eye on her. She is so sweet and curious so she approaches me often. We’ll hope this is just a unique quality, not a real problem.

    Curved Beak

I’m curious. I have a chick who seems to have a more curved beak that the others. She doesn’t seem to have any problems eating or drinking. Is this in the realm of normal? I’m a first time chicken mama and spend weird amounts of time just observing behavior and checking their little bodies...

    Growing too fast

Thanks for the great ideas. I’m off to get a dog crate to put in the shady part of the outside run. I can put them outside for a few hours tomorrow and see how they like having more room. I don’t have electricity by the coops but will set up an area for them to play and see how it goes. I...
