    Wanting hens in Kansas City

Thanks! We'll be doing that, but I'm hoping to add a few adult hens now rather than the several month wait for eggs. If you do want to find a home for an adult Bresse that's one of the breeds I'd happily take because Bresse! We got our current back from TSC and I am hoping to add a grown hen or...

    Wanting hens in Kansas City

I got a mix of hens and turns out five lay brown eggs along with our single olive egger. Does anyone in the KC area have laying-age or near-laying-age or near-end-of-laying age colored egg layers? Green, blue, pink, peach (cemani and silkie color), and even white would be nice. Doesn't have to...

Barred rock hen x Sussex rooster; are babies sex-linked?

I was given an egg from a barred rock female with what looks (and acts) like a Sussex rooster. We have a little mostly-cream baby out of the egg today. Is this a cross that would be sex-linked, and if so, how can ID it as male or female? thanks!

How reasonable is it to add a few pigeons or doves?

I have/had most of the really cool breeds :D We're having fun with our girls, I'd just like to get something a little different again as the ducks turned out to be great pets.

How reasonable is it to add a few pigeons or doves?

Hi! I'd like to add something different to our flock of pet birds. Right now we've got 8 chickens (4 laying hens, 4 opinionated lawn ornaments) and five ducks (one drake, four hens). We live on about a quarter acre and they've got free range of the back yard all day, with a scotch collie...

    Modifying a horizontal storage shed

I'm planning to get a horizontal storage shed and convert it into a coop. Put it up on some cinderblocks, add a chain and a wedge to securely lift the top and provide ventilation, place some perches in it, and cut a few holes then cover them with translucent plastic to provide some light. I can...

I know now what killed my bird. What next?

Dogs work for us. We have an aussie/border/lab/dunno mix that did a good job watching but is too much of a house pet. So, we got a Scotch Collie. Haven't lost a bird to predators since! He sits out there and keeps an eye on everything and kills rats, goes after foxes, goes after racoons, and has...

How can I keep my chickens safe from hawks?

We have a scotch collie. He's an outdoor Yard Guard by choice (comes in whenever he wants but would rather be outside keeping an eye on everything). We got him at 10 weeks, he's now a year and a half old. He killed three pullets and two ducklings when younger, until we caught him in the act and...

My dog is a chicken eater, don't know what to do

Modern roughs have been bred to be suburban pets. They're fantastic dogs, but there are some of the "original" collies (scotches) with a few lines that are being bred for poultry ability. They'll herd and guard the hens, one girl even trained hers to collect the eggs :D If you get a good rough...

My dog is a chicken eater, don't know what to do

It's half bird-dog. Poodles are essentially fluffy pointers in build and not too different in personality, just even smarter. So...not too surprising you're having problems. Take her with you when you work with the chickens, on a short leash, put a muzzle on her if you must. Never let her out...

Comment by 'maroongrad' in article 'Top 10 Ways to Protect Your Chickens from Predators'

YES on the dog. We added a scotch collie. He heads out to check them before bed, wants out around 3 or 4 am to do a patrol and mark, and then spends most of the day outside keeping an eye on things. Haven't lost a bird to anything else but a human :( since then...and now he guards against people...

    Fertile non-Mallard X Muscovy Cross?

I dug way back to find this, and it's exactly what I needed to know :) Unfortunately, we don't know if the Mullard had a mallard hen or drake parent, but there's a 50/50 chance of eggs. She's going to a pet home regardless, so even if she never lays she'll be spoiled!

    Stopped laying... Ugh

We have a cam pointed at the yard...it's not helping :P At least we've got four others, and the ducks, laying regularly! They're pets, eggs are just bonus and shared about with friends and family :)

Hen stopped laying- but seems healthy.

A vet that works with parrots and exotics should be able to treat a chicken. That's where ours go! If you can't find one locally, any chance you'll be going to a bigger city where there is one? Hens generally love car rides. I'd suspect she needed more/longer/different antibiotics.

    Stopped laying... Ugh

Did they ever pick up laying again? Ours are back to normal, but the leghorn is hiding eggs SOMEWHERE. She does the I LAID AN EGG cackle, I caught the other hens fighting over a white eggshell up by the house (already smushed), but I CANNOT find the dozen or so eggs she's laid! Last time, a hen...

    Stopped laying... Ugh

Our flock has 7 laying hens and three of them are on break right now. It has been hot here, although not to the point that the West Coast went through, and they're eating less feed and more forage, hanging out in the shade, moving less, drinking more...and the leghorn, ayam cemani, and one of...

    Japanese Beetles

It would need to be a LOT of beetles! I doubt it, not unless they eat a huge amount all at once, and by huge I do not mean a few dozen each, I'm thinking enough to totally stuff a crop!

Help me get rid of my nightly visitors!!!!!

There are people who have ferrets and terriers and such and who will come out for a few hours and literally kill almost all the rats for you. The dogs are bred for that, and they are GOOD at it. See if you can google anyone local who does this; it's a one-evening-fix. Then, follow up with poison...

    calling any one from missouri

awwwww.... We have 4 Cayuga ducklings that have hit the 10 week mark, we're hoping one of them quacks! And a Duck of Evil; half cayuga, half mallard call duck. Tiny and relentless in his rage, with a bum foot too!

    calling any one from missouri

We had a basement that had been framed, ready for drywall...I swear they gave the job to a bunch of drunken baboons. Some pieces would have a dozen badly-driven nails in one spot, others would have one nail but in the wrong spot. It was actually pretty hilarious. I really do think they were...
