Mature Chickens Sudden death in sleep - 3 dead so far - what are common causes of this?

Good catch casportponey! it is plastic but the tank heater has some metal in it. Perhaps that was the cause. Will keep the ACV out of it for now. Although you would think the banty's or pigeons would die before the big cochins. Either way will have to do no ACV until it gets warm...

Mature Chickens Sudden death in sleep - 3 dead so far - what are common causes of this?

Start with my question, the rest of the details below Are their any common disease that will suddenly kill healthy mature chickens in their sleep? What normally kills mature chickens quickly out of the blue? Been keeping chickens for over 20 years and never has seen this before, any...

Review by '' on item 'The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow'

Your chicken comes down with something, it will be in this book. Some chapters were way over my head in knowledge and since it has so many disease you will probably mis-diagnosis your chicken with a disease that only happens in the tropics :) Overall great book to have but not really a fun...

Review by '' on item 'Little Giant - 3 Gallon Plastic Poultry Waterer - PPF3'

Have used one for a few years now. Pros - Large enough were if I am gone for a weekend my chickens have enough water, also small enough were I don't think I am wasting water when changing it out for fresh water. - light weight and not heavy like the metal ones - in winter I take the red ring...

Average Life Span of a Chicken/Rooster?

I bet I have kept over 100 "pet" chickens spanning over 20 years and the oldest one I had was a hen that lived until 8. Other than an eggbound hens my chickens are pretty healthy can survive for a long time. But it only takes 1 moment for a predator to ruin it all. Also need to watch for...

In my opinion the worst chicken killer is...

Totally agree. Plus they don't need much of a hole to get through to cause havoc. I have had 3 mink attacks in 3 years. With one of the attacks filled up 3 garbage bags full of birds.

Can I have a big rooster, with a serama rooster?

Like what others have said, you can but hiding spots are good and you need to keep a close eye on them. And just because they are good now, does not mean it's forever. I have had happy bliss in my flocks in the past, but then all of a sudden WW3 breaks out out I have bloody birds.

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

For Chickens Got to go with Mink, They can squeeze through the smallest hole and just keep killing till every bird is dead. Plus they like to pile them all up in a corner. I have a totally enclosed chicken coop and run. And still have had 3 huge losses to the Mink. Dogs would be close...

    Hawk attack

Quote: Chicken Rooster, a pigeon rooster is called a cock. Any animal that sounds an alarm will do. Growing up, I remember the turkeys would alert also and that would send the pigeons barreling to the coop.

    pheasants insane?

Yeah pheasants are best to kept separate from chickens, I have heard even hen pheasants can get nasty. I inherited a pheasant, it's Swinhoe Rooster which kinda looks like a silver pheasant without the silver back. Of course all I have is my chicken pen so he is innermixed with the chickens...

    Gutted hen, chickens or rodents?

Had an older egg bound hen and she passed away. I did not find her body for a few days and she was behind a hay bale in the coop. The strangest part was her whole insides were gone, completly gutted. She was eggbound and looked like she was going to burst earlier in the week so I am woundering...
