What's going on under this scab? *graphic image*

ANOTHER bumblefoot post- sorry! Midge, my rescue Pekin, has had a couple of epsom salt soaks the past couple of days after noticing a scab on her foot. I've been through this before so I'm confident with how to treat bumblefoot, but upon removing the scab, there doesn't seem to be any sign of...

questions about a poorly Pekin- stiff neck and lethargy

Unfortunately, she took a turn for the worst this morning. I was gathering blankets and getting ready to rush her into the vet when she collapsed and had a seizure in my arms. I don't know what took her, but she held on and fought for a long time, even seemed to be improving :( She'd been...

questions about a poorly Pekin- stiff neck and lethargy

I called the vet and they walked me through a little duck triage to see if we needed to get her in urgently. They said if something like that was truly stuck in her throat, there is no way she would be eating/drinking/behaving the way she is, and it would've almost certainly killed her by now...

questions about a poorly Pekin- stiff neck and lethargy

@Miss Lydia update: I am almost positive she has a nail/screw stuck in her throat. I was giving it a good massage and can feel something hard in there. An emergency vet visit is an option and may be necessary but I'd first like to see if there's anything I can do at home to ease it up and...

questions about a poorly Pekin- stiff neck and lethargy

Thank you @Miss Lydia & @Jenbirdee ! I gave her an epsom salt flush since I had it on hand which she took really well, and now I've got her on some electrolyte/nutrient solutions to keep her hydrated and replenished. Her legs and feet are actually the least of my worries, they look the best...

questions about a poorly Pekin- stiff neck and lethargy

I have a 1 year old Pekin who has been through quite a lot this summer. She had a severe case of bumblefoot and after months of treatment and isolation, I finally felt comfortable reintroducing her to the flock and living outdoors. This was maybe two weeks ago. She was moving slower than the...

question for those with bumblefoot 'surgery' experience

I had a Pekin named Penny too! My starting condition of Dolly's foot was very similar to yours, pretty severe. I have a feeling the 'swelling' in my case is probably extra tissue in her foot pad like you mentioned because she was definitely overweight. I'll continue epsom salt poultice! Thank...

question for those with bumblefoot 'surgery' experience

thank you me too! The one good thing about her indoor-duck bumblefoot treatment is that we've had so much more control over her eating and exercise so we think we've gotten her down to a more comfortable weight :) Did you have a lot of inflammation with any of your bumblefoot experiences? She's...

question for those with bumblefoot 'surgery' experience

thank you so much! I had her bandaged with that epsom salt poultice the day before I was able to remove the scab so I think it was really helpful in pulling that infection out! I'll let it heal over as is and just keep an eye on it. She's a Pekin :)

question for those with bumblefoot 'surgery' experience

Hi all! I've been treating a pretty severe case of bumblefoot at home and have made some really optimistic progress. Today, I finally got a big scab and attached bumblefoot plug removed, which I've been slowly trying to achieve for a couple of weeks. I removed what was attached to the scab and...

    duck belly pouch- normal?

Thanks everyone! My mind is definitely at ease. They've all laid before and didn't develop this pouch, so I was worried about it because it's new. :) Luckily we have a wonderful avian & exotic vet nearby. She wants to double-check on everything *just in case* especially since they aren't...

    duck belly pouch- normal?

Update: I called the vet this morning and explained what's going on and we made an appointment for Thursday. She thinks it sounds like a fluid build-up that ducks sometimes get in their reproductive system so she wants to check it out and potentially drain it and prescribe some antibiotics. She...

    duck belly pouch- normal?

Thank you! She's such a sweet duck. It sounds like our symptoms are the same which makes me optimistic that this is just a normal thing that develops as part of their reproductive system at this age. (June is approaching one year old) Keep an eye on the thread and I'll post an update with the...

    duck belly pouch- normal?

A few days ago we noticed our Buff started to develop a little bit of a pouch in her belly, and after inspection, we seemed to notice it in our pekin and runner as well. All are female but aren't currently laying, which I assume is from the season change and recent molt. I've given them all a...

    Recovering from predator attack

Waffles didn’t make it. Things went downhill very quickly this afternoon and she just couldn’t hold on. My heart is completely shattered

    Recovering from predator attack

Waffles update: Vet called us to check in this morning and it was all good news! She's drinking water, splashing around a bit, and just generally looking brighter. They think/hope her raspy breathing is just from a swollen throat area that will heal with time. They've also given her multiple...

    Recovering from predator attack

Waffles made it to the vet thank goodness. She seemed a bit more alert this morning and was straining less when breathing. When we dropped her off the vets put her in a shallow pool where she decided to drink some water! She's going to be with them for the next few days at least so they can...

    Recovering from predator attack

That’s my hope too. She’s still behaving the same, we gave her the other antibiotic injection that the vet last night sent us home with. I’ve been giving her water out of a dropper on the sides of her beak and landed a few in her mouth. It’s hard to tell if she’s swallowing but that’s the best...

    Recovering from predator attack

Update: Waffles has laid an egg which seems like a good sign but I'm still worried about her drinking and breathing. I have a feeling her nostrils are pretty clogged from blood and throw-up and I'd like to help her clean them out. The way she's behaving on these pain meds I don't think she's...

    Recovering from predator attack

She’s mostly the same, I think the pain meds have her pretty loopy, she’s just been standing in her cage looking around all night. Luckily we had the antibiotic given to her last night and the vet sent us home with another injection to give her today until we can see a vet tomorrow. My biggest...
