I'm not sure if this is PMing you.... but in the article about grass for chickens you wrote, "grass clippings for them, avoid giving them long, thick pieces. Be sure you only feed grass blade pieces no smaller than 1". Did you mean they should only get grass shorter than an inch? Or if you...
Alchesmist doesn't vaccinate and it isn't an option when you buy there. I bought some chicks from them and some from McMurray at the same time. I asked Alchemist if it was ok to have vaccinated with unvaccinated (as I also have hens that are vaccinated). SHe said it would be fine as their...
I got a mystery box too, from Alchemist this year. Mine are 7 weeks old now. I'm pretty sure I have two azure eggers and two sage eggers. I can only tell who is who when they are all together. Then I can tell two are more silver grey in the neck and chest (azure eggers) and two are more...
One month later and she is still with us. Maybe a week behind the others as far as development of tail and loss of fluff. She still breathes faster than everyone else, about 90 per minute but that's better than the 120 it was.
I did take her to am avian vet. She said probably respiratory...
Wow scarring! I did have four roos before, now three. He's going to a friend so I want to make sure it's not contagious. I would think my little d'uccle mini roo would have the worst scarring. He always loses the girl. I'll have to go take another look at him. Thanks for your thoughts!
Hello! I'm wondering about this whiteness on my Isbar's comb. The whole flock has some scant whiteness but the roosters have it the worst and this Isbar is the worst of them. The hens look more like dry flakiness. They do get good organic feed and barely any treats ( a fifty pound bag of...
Hatched March 15. Started March 26. She's still going at it. I'm trying to get into the avian vet but this is the only vet within 1.5 hour drive that sees chickens. She's warm enough. She's with other chicks, next to my bed so I wake up many times a night to check on them. I make sure...
Thanks for advice and questions!
I made another video, long enough to count respirations. And there is a chick the same age in it too and you can see how different the breathing is. Eyes look good or great, but for occassionally sleepily closing. Nothing from the nose. When I open her beak...
Maybe I'm not forcing the beak open far enough? The beak sure doesn't open as wide as the pics on the internet. I just assume I'm somehow not getting the angle right and just seeing down the tongue.
The chick is still going at it. Respiratory rate is the same as the first day, about 120. She still whistles with every exhale, eats, drinks and has normal poop. i don't think she can keep it up much longer. Any advice on how to get a good look at her tracheal opening? I can open her mouth...
Thanks for replying. I don't feel anything odd. No air bubbles it seems. The chick seems a little better, or at least not worse. But still breathing about twice as fast as the others her age. She does eat and drink.
@casportpony do you have any advice? I've seen you give a lot of good...
This is a Marans or Marans mix chick (got a surprise box from a small breeder) hatched 12 days ago in an incubator probably. Today weighs 55 gms. I got the chicks 5 days ago, picked up at farm, not shipped. Of 22 chicks, 3 have died (two of those were with the lady I split the batch with)...
I'm wondering if everything went well? I have multiple broodies right now and would like to have them together in a shared run. How long did you keep the hens and chicks in the dog crates after they hatched? Also, could the chicks fit through the bars? Will the mamas attack the other chicks?
