Is there a way to clean poop or dirt off off eggs without removing the protective coating? We want to keep our eggs unrefrigerated, but would prefer not to have poopy eggs sitting on our counter. Or give poopy eggs away to friends. Any advice?
Is this early frostbite? If yes, what are we supposed to do to keep it from getting worse? Vaseline? We live in New England and have been using the deep litter method for the past two months. We have a well-ventilated coop and aerate the bedding every day. Any advice would be appreciated!!
We got this egg today that looks very different from all our previous ones. I think we have a new layer. Could this be a first egg from a French Black Copper Maran? Why the strange texture on top? Will they become darker over time as she gets the hang of laying?
Hi all —
The cold weather is almost upon us in New England and I want to be prepared for frozen water. We have a 12-gal waterer (https://overezchickencoop.com/products/overez-chicken-waterer) and curious what folks would recommend. Our waterer is in our run and we prefer not to bring it into...
Indeed you are correct! Today we got our first olive egger egg (seen here next to a cream legbar egg). Two of our six ladies are laying now. I love the surprise of checking their nesting boxes every day!!!
After 25 weeks, one of our six ladies finally laid an egg! I can't quite tell if it's from one of our Cream Legbars or our Olive Egger -- any thoughts? It's a bit greener in reality than this picture implies.
(I checked the nesting boxes later today and found another one!!)
How many times to you spray per weekly treatment??
We did a spray yesterday, let it dry (SOOOO many dead mites), and then powdered the coop in DE. The ladies were still hesitant to go back in for the night so we put them in there. This morning, we found a bunch more dead ones stuck in the DE...
Update.
After the oil/water/soap mixture, we doused the coop in DE late yesterday and really rubbed it in to every surface and nook and cranny. We let the chickens sleep in the run (their preference at the moment) and first thing this morning went out to check on things. We didn't see a...
Do we need to worry about the mites infesting our house too? We've found a few crawling on us inside after discovering this whole situation last night.
We're getting a pressure sprayer and some Permethrin tonight and will go to town with it tomorrow.
Thanks all!
Upon further research, we definitely have Red Roost Mites -- we found red and grey ones this morning. And this also explains why we're not seeing them on the chickens themselves. Looks like our focus needs to be on the coop.
Anyone have specific advice for RRMs?

We're trying a natural solution I found online -- spraying the coop down with a mixture of cooking oil, water, and dish soap. And then sprinkling the crap out of it with Diatomaceous Earth. Also spraying the chickens (who thus far seem to have no symptoms of mites -- I think we caught this...

Our chickens have been reluctant to go into their coop for the last few nights. Tonight we discovered why -- the coop is infested with mites! Help!! What do we do? I've seen everything from Diatomaceous Earth to oil/water/soap, to permethrin. We haven't had a chance to inspect the chickens...
Our small flock is 18 weeks old and has been reliably going into the coop at night since week 6. We have an automatic door, and all six head into the coop at least 30 mins or so before the door closes. Like clockwork...it's wonderful! Our coop has three nesting boxes that we had filled with...
