    Negative temps

I used Vaseline, and their combs did not get worse...did not fall off. From that point on made keeping the coop dry a higher priority than providing warm food or water. Kerosene heater helps warm the general area with dry heat.

    Negative temps

We live in central Wisconsin. Our shed/coop has no power, so below zero nights are a challenge. Although they could probably survive it, we use a kerosene heater on the coldest of nights. Works pretty well, and it would shut down if it got knocked out by any pesty critter that might be running...

    One Hen Lays Poopy Eggs

Hello Helpful Ones! We have 4 chickens that will be 2 years old in April. 1 BO, 1 Aussie, and 2 Eggers. (We had 2 of each breed, but a fox killed a BO and Aussie last spring. :(} One of the Eggers has poop on her eggs about 25% of the time. While she has not been injured by the other girls...

    Is She Molting?

OK, that makes sense. I'm a newbie and expected molting to be in the fall - and that all of them would molt at the same time. Guess not. Thanks!!!

    Is She Molting?

Our 16 month Orpington started losing some (not a lot) of feathers a few weeks ago and has stopped laying. Is this possibly a slow and early molt? We were recently on a 6 day vacation, and a couple local farm girls did our chicken sitting. She was laying before we left. Would emotional...

    Frustrated with all the options

We live in Wisconsin, so probably similar climate. Last April, we bought our first 6 baby chicks from a feed store that is reputed to be trustworthy. Our experience was excellent. We chose 2 Orpingtons, 2 Australorpes, and 2 Easter Eggers. All 6 were correctly sexed and remain healthy as I...

    Eating Chickens' First eggs

So nice to hear I'm not the only strange one. Thank you for sharing your hesitation - needless as it may be. This morning, my husband and I scrambled up 6 of them with some onion, and they were wonderful. But, it' does seem to be easier eating them scrambled than "over easy." Like you, I...

    Eating Chickens' First eggs

First time chicken mama (Mommy Roo) and find myself hesitant/nervous to eat the first eggs that our Orpingtons and Australorps are starting to produce. Is this common or am I really goofy???

Official BYC Poll: How Long Have You Been Keeping Chickens?

Almost 17 weeks. Yeah, total newbie!!! Most days are very enjoyable. I am a bit concerned, though, about having less freedom for spontaneous get-a-ways.

    Feeding 16 Week Chicken

Thank you, everyone! That was very helpful!!! I will get some oyster shells and offer them separately and see what they decide to do. I know they are on the very young end of starting to lay, but just want to be ready. Maybe it's not connected, but it seems the Aussies and the Orpingtons...

    Feeding 16 Week Chicken

Hi! We are new to BYC. We are also new chicken owners. We have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Austrolorpes, and 2 Easter Eggers. They are friendly and healthy, and everything is going pretty well. But I'm wondering about our choice of feed. We still have half a bag of Chick Starter Crumbles, but it's...
