Hi everybody, I was just sent an e-mail that there are confirmed cases of Avian Influenza in Washington State. Nothing in domestic birds, yet, but I wanted to share the website so you can be aware of the symptoms. http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov/ It has some really good information...

    badly injured head

Any ideas on the best way to handle the head injury? We got it drinking & will feed her yogurt tomorrow. One eye is barely open & is oozy like conjuctivitis. It does smell nasty, but no obvious signs of infection. Letting her rest & will clean the head off tomorrow.

    No longer water-repellent

My duck was attacked by my dog :( The dog took chunks out of both sides of her butt between the tail & the wings on each side of the duck's spine. The dog also did serious damage to the duck's wing-muscle (righ below her wing.) I managed to get the duck all healed up (under her wing is still a...

    thickened eggshell end

Every now & again one of my chickens will lay an egg with a thick layer of shell on the narrow end of the egg. Is something wrong or is this normal? I tried to find one, but I don't have any right now to take a picture of it. I think its the Polish hen that is laying the weird eggs, but since...

    Gender & Butcher questions

We have two 2-3 month old heritage cross turkeys. Neither one has much of a snood, but I don't know if that's because they're girls, or they're too young. What do you guys think? Sorry about the images, they're from my cell phone. The other question I had was how old should they be...

    New owner - please help

I've added two young turkeys to my flock of chickens. They're probably about a month or two old. (They're actually going to be moving to my mother-in-law's place soon). I've got them in a cage outside so that they can't get hurt or attacked by my chickens, but they're rapidly out-growing it...

    Broody hens

I think my girls have decided to get broody at the same time My little white cochin hasn't moved from the nest in about 2 days (although I've picked her up, & taken the egg she lays, leaving her with the golfball. This normally wouldn't be a problem, except that now my three other girls lay...

    Chickens & Weed & Feed

My flock of 4 are allowed to free-range in the back yard any time they want. I've noticed a huge increase in dandilions over the past couple of years, and am now tired of having more dandilions than grass. So I want to apply some Weed & Feed to my backyard. However, I'm really concerned about...

    Finally!!!

After having her for almost a full year, my little white cochin (who I bought as a 10-12 mo old) finally gave me her first egg! She's normally so quiet, so when I heard her clucking & making all kinds of noise, I went out to make sure she was OK. She was just announcing her egg for me Now...

    Confused hen/rooster

I have four hens, and have been getting 3 eggs a day, two brown, & one white. The two birds I know are laying lay a brown & a white egg. The other two are a tiny cochin & a standard silverlaced wydonnette. I'm almost positive the wydonnette (aka Bo) is laying the large, light brown egg (same...

    Worming chickens

I think my birds have worms They free-range throughout the back yard, so I really haven't checked their poop, but my dog that also runs loose with them is exhibiting the behaviors of having worms. What do you guys recommend for the best treatment and how do you apply it? Should I worm them...

    Mealworms

I just bought a few mealworms to try out a breeding program. I saw a thread on here about raising them in a 3-tiered plastic bin. The adults are in the top, with a screen under them, the eggs drop down to the 2nd bin, where they grow to mealworms. I think that there was some more details, but...

    Gizzard stones

My chickens free-range in my backyard. They've got unlimited access to crumbles, dog food (which they steal from the dog) as well as anything they can scrounge up. I also feed them veggie waste (skins, spinach, etc.) There's a lot of dirt available for baths. I was checking out a thread on...

    Isolation

I've got a roughly 2-yr old white bantam cochin hen that I purchased from a hatchery last year. She's the smallest in the flock & very skittish around me (the other 3 follow me around a lot). She's never laid an egg. The last several days, I've been noticing her getting smaller & smaller...

    Looking skinny

I've got a little Cochin hen who's been slowly looking worse & worse over the winter. She used to be a little ball of fluff, so you could hardly tell where her body ended & her tail started! But recently, I've noticed that she's a lot skinnier - she's no longer fluffy. She is shedding...

adding meat birds to the flock

I currently have 4 laying hens. I'm thinking about picking up some meat chicks when they arrive at the local feed & supply store in a couple of months. However, I don't know how to kill, clean, or prepare them chickens. My husband knows how to kill & gut, but he doesn't know the best way to...

    Who's laying the eggs?

I've got four different breeds (4 hens total). I'm wondering how to tell who's laying the eggs. I know my Polish's eggs, they're all white-ish & kinda smallish. I've also got a standard Silver-laced Wyandotte, a Black sex-link (aka black star), and a white bantem cochin. According to the...

    clipping toenails

I have 2 hatchery-raised birds (bought them around 9/10 months old). Since they never had access to hard ground, the claws on their toes are really thick, long & deformed. Any suggestions on clipping their claws? I've got dog toe-nail clippers, would they work? These girls don't like to be...

    cooked pork?

Will my chickens be OK with eating cooked pork meat & fat? I slow-cooked some pork loin & yellow apples with some brown sugar & cinamon. It ended up pretty good, but we couldn't finish it all. Can I feed it to my birds?
