if she wants to show them, i would recommend getting a copy of the Standard of Perfection from the American Poultry Association and/or the American Bantam Association, along with this book. they will all tell you WAY more than i ever could, especially considering i’m just a beginner! good luck...
ooh these are much easier to tell thank you! i’d actually say that all except the 2nd and 5th chick down (not counting the group photo) look like proper millies to me! those two are just a smidge too dark, but it’s possible that’s just their chick down color and they could lighten up after...
i agree that chick 5 is the only cockerel right now, though it’s still fairly early to tell.
color variations would be a little easier to guess with full body pics, but i’d like to point out that a good portion of the chicks you posted aren’t true mille fleurs. they appear to be mostly orange...
chickens take 21 days to hatch, so if you’ve had them in there a week they should have around 14 days left. from what i can tell they look fine, especially with the first picture (the second pic is hard to judge).
hardest part is definitely losing them, be it to predators, illness, or something unpreventable.
i also voted for cost, but that’s really bc we also have other animals and i‘m still a student (currently unemployed). i’m very grateful my family is willing to let me keep them! ☺️
i agree with fluffycrow. brahmas and faverolles are two of my favorite breeds, especially for their docile personalities, but none of mine are submissive to the point of taking a beating. in fact, i’ve found that those girls are higher in the pecking order than some of the others, and i’ve seen...
In my experience handling them makes them friendlier! It’s also good practice for when/if you need to trim their spurs. I may be biased since the boy I raised comes running up whenever he sees me though.
I saw in your other thread that you were giving her vitamins and they seemed to be helping, are you still doing that? I think she may have a vitamin deficiency from not getting enough nutrients from her food (chicks should eat Starter Grower until they reach laying age, around 18-20 weeks). The...
she looks like a silver laced wyandotte to me, but i won’t swear to it. definitely not a brahma though seeing as how her legs are clean instead of feathered
1.) okay that makes sense, thank you. i’ll make sure he’s drinking plenty.
2.) i haven’t noticed him being picked on and he doesn’t have any visible injuries, so i will try to return him to his flock tomorrow.
3.) his current diet is dumor 16% layer crumble. all of my roosters have eaten this...
hi everyone!
i have a year old cochin bantam rooster who appears to have wry neck. i brought him home yesterday after noticing that his comb was an ashen purple and very cold, and that his neck was crooked. after warming him up using a heat lamp, his comb returned to it’s normal red color, but...
apologies for the late update folks! this is by no means the best photo, but he’s growing up to be a handsome lil guy if you ask me! i believe he’s incomplete silver laced; his mother is most likely our silver laced cochin bantam, and his father is probably our white cochin bantam.
hi everyone! i just hatched a bunch of chicks; they’re cochin bantams and cochin bantam x d’uccles. one of them has a color and pattern i’ve never seen before, so i was wondering if anyone knows what it is, or if it’s just a result of mixing different colors together? either way, it’s a gorgeous...
The coop looks well built and there are great build photos, but the complete lack of dimensions and descriptions makes it hard to follow, and hard for someone to build themselves.
