Would you call this red or brown?

I know that I'm not the one you pinged, but looks like a pulllet to me. My EE cockerels (and mixes made from EEs) tend to have pretty pronounced pea combs and visible combs/wattles by 5-7 weeks. A very pretty bird either way. Reminds me of caramel and vanilla. :)

    Breeding for Temperament

How interesting ! I had a feeling that Chip's undesirable behaviors came from being undersocialized with chickens, but reading others' experiences adds some good context. It's one of the reasons I'm trying to move toward a mixed-age flock using broody hens. If only the girls wanted to be...

    Breeding for Temperament

Hello, hello. I'm back once more. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on breeding for temperament; you see, we have five chickens currently. Background: Four hens whose original rooster was sentenced to dinner, and one Olive Egger cockerel (7mo). "Chip" was hand-raised after his siblings...

Personal hygiene when owning chickens and other animals

I do my best to keep track of "inside" and "outside" hands. I wash them frequently, especially after handling eggs or being outside in general. I have a pair of steel-toed boots I use only for working the farm, and then a few other pairs of shoes I only wear to town/travel. The boots stay right...

    Healthiest chicken breeds

They've been okay from my experience, but the minimum chick quantity usually ranges from 4-6 depending on your location. I would do my your best to look and make sure the chicks are lively and not too crowded. I've seen a few misfortunate ones. They also only have a few breeds on rotation, and...

Possible Chick Colors (Olive Egger over Buff Orp/Black Giant)

The hatchery doesn't disclose their cross, but my best guess is a Marans (as Chip has feathered feet) and probably an Araucana (sp?). I was thinking the red-orange was coming through due to the Marans.

Possible Chick Colors (Olive Egger over Buff Orp/Black Giant)

Hello. I have the following chickens that I'm planning on breeding: 1 cockerel, an Olive Egger who was a black downed chick with a white spot. 4 hens, one a Buff Orpington (yellow/white chick) and three Black Jersey Giants (black down chicks with a few white spots). They look like this now...

Tips for Pairing/Grouping Chickens for Breeding?

Hello ! If this is in the incorrect category, my sincerest apologies. Background: I have an Olive Egger cockerel (Chip, 7 weeks) that I'm waiting on to grow up. I would like to prove out his genes by breeding him to the brown egg laying females, and depending on the outcome, I would also like...

Hello, forum ! Nice to meet you.

Hello ! This account is being run by Mathias at Backyard Alchemist. It's nice to meet you. (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? While we're not exactly new to chickens, this is the first flock that we're managing by ourselves. We got our first batch of chickens in...
