    How heavy should chickens be?

First of all, I don’t keep meat birds, so this thread is not about how much fat my chicken has. One of my chickens, Cue, is very heavy. She’s my heaviest bird by far (except for the rooster). She also has very thin legs that look way too small for her bulk. She’s not fluffy, but her feathers are...

    ~The Broody Thread~

It’s spring again where I live, and you know what that means: broodies! I know there used to be a broody thread on BYC, but unfortunately, I can’t find it, so I started my own. This is a place for people to talk about their broody hens, post pictures, and ask questions. In my flock of six, I...

    Soft eggs?

My lovely speckled Sussex is the wildest of all our birds, and she goes to the driveway every day to eat gravel and bugs. We also let our birds have eggshells in the compost, and there are oyster shells on the patio for them to pick at. I was sure she was getting enough calcium, but yesterday, I...

    Happy Mother’s Day to Cloudy

One year ago, I was working at a farm, and I noticed a little Buff Orpington hen with an eye so swollen it looked like someone had stuffed a grape into her eye socket. I was worried that the other farmers would just want to kill her and be done with it. After all, why waste time on a sick bird...

    What in compost is safe?

So, I have a quite large yard that I allow my chickens to free-range in. Tucked into one of the corners is my relatively small compost heap, kept in place with wooden pallets. It’s about there by three feet. The chickens love it, but I just wanted to know what was safe for them. Here are some...

    PLEASE HELP

This is sort of an update on my sick hen, Maisy. She’s the first one I posted about, in the thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/why-is-my-hen-gasping-with-her-comb-turning-purple.1573567/ She’s doing better, and eating a lot. Eating a LOT. When I put the birds to bed, I always come...

Do you have a favorite chicken? (I won’t tell!)

All chickens are great (plus ducks, quail, peacocks, and other poultry), but there is always that one bird who steals your heart. Who is it in your flock? Mine is Lovelace, the sweetest little Barred Rock who has bumblefoot. She has pure white eyebrows, which makes her look old and wise.

How do you name your chickens?

What names do you give your birds?

What are your favorite herbs for chickens?

I’ve heard of people using herbs to help chickens to some extent. I sprinkle freshly cut yarrow around my coop when I clean it to help with respiratory issues, and sometimes mint. I know there’s tons more, though. Which ones do you use?

    Questions about titles?

So, I know how the trophy points work, like ‘hatching’ and ‘songster’ and stuff. What I’m not sure I understand are the orange and blue labels like ‘BYC friend’ and a few others I can’t remember. Do they run on the same system? Or do you have to be a staff member?

    Nice Rooster?

So, when I got chickens in the pandemic, I ordered six female chicks. Two barred rocks, two black Australorps, one speckled sussex, and one golden laced Wyandotte. They were all very sweet, and nothing seemed abnormal. A month in, I noticed one of my barred rocks, Cherry, was dancing around and...

    Hello!

Hi! I’m DotToDot. I’ve posted a few threads already, for my sick chickens, but I never really got the chance to outright say hi. HI!! Over the years, I’ve looked up a lot of things about chickens, and there’s always been one or two threads on BYC that has helped me. Thank you! (Also, I know...

How were your birds silly today?

Everyone has that one bird who just can’t quite grasp the situation of something and always ends up doing something ridiculous. What was your silly birb experience today?

    Calling All Vermonters~

I haven’t seen it on here yet, so I started this to connect with other Vermonters! I’m up north with my flock of six- where are you? 🌲🌳

    Hen Behaving like Rooster?

I have a lovely Golden Laced Wyandotte, Chunker. Although our pecking order has shifted quite a bit, she’s always been near the top, and is now our lead hen. Before I get to the story, I would like to say that I DO have a rooster, whose name is Charlie. He’s very good at keeping everyone in...

    Runaway hen- but not?

One of my favorite chickens has been acting weird. I love her- she’s a three-year-old Speckled Sussex who we named LB. She’s always been VERY wild, and since the farm we got her from has a habit of keeping grouse and chickens together, we’ve long wondered if she might be part grouse. I think she...

    Maybe Bumblefoot?

I have a barred rock hen who got bumblefoot about a year ago. At least, I thought it was bumblefoot. Now I’m seeing pictures on this website and on line that show a hard black spot. My hen has a tough black growth kinda like sandpaper sprouting out of her foot. It was about two centimeters long...

Why is my hen gasping with her comb turning purple?

I have a Black Australorp Hen who will be three years old on this April 28th. A month or so ago she started to kinda shy away from… everything. Her abdomen was swollen, but I didn’t really give any thought to it until a day ago when she started stretching out her neck with a little strangled...
