    Whizbang Chicken Plucker

Everything is new except the re-purposed 55 gallon drum which contained food dye previously. 3/4 hp farm duty motor, aluminum featherplate.

    Pre-chilling? Chilling prior to evisceration?

I just watched a YouTube video in which the processor chilled his chickens prior to eviscerating. Anybody know what the benefit of this would be?

"White broilers" vs. "jumbo Cornish X Rocks"

Meyer's Hatchery in Ohio uses the first term while McMurray's in Iowa uses the second. Has anyone gotten both of these from these specific hatcheries? I've had good luck with McMurray, but the Meyer prices would save 30-40%.

    Processing - foot-controlled faucet designs?

I'll be processing a couple broiler batches soon and realize the value of a foot-controlled faucet for the purpose of flushing out carcasses before throwing them in the chill tub. Does anybody have a cheap, well-working system design they could share and post pics of here?

    Adjustable auto chicken waterers (nipples)

I had posted a question re: nipple height. Responders mentioned that they adjusted theirs over time. I came up with a simple solution. From your 5 gallon reservoir bucket, have a feeder pvc go straight down to a "t" that feeds to your horizontal pvc. This is assuming your bucket rests on top of...

Benefit of vinyl on pastured poultry pen

This message could also go under "Coop and Run...," but I feel like "meatie raisers" are their own breed and are birds of a different feather (pardon the puns). I recently used vinyl siding on a pasture pen and noticed a benefit during the heat. Due to the flexibilty, I was easily able to...

Nirvana (well, almost) = auto watering

I realize this post could go under "Flock management" perhaps, but it's relating to my 4 week-old Cornish Xs...so I put it here. My 2y.o. son Markie helped me complete my auto chicken nipple watering system & installation today. The birds need to figure it out ...but I'm excited to be able to...

    Pastured Poultry Poop question

As mentioned in another post, I moved my Cornish Xs to pasture a couple days ago. The pen allows for 1.5 sq. ft./bird. The poop build-up is more than I thought it would be. Do I need to worry about this? So far I've moved the pen once per day. I'll aim to move it twice per day - should help...

Finally out on pasture...and, of course, here comes the rain!

I finally got my pasture pen done a few days ago with the "help" of my two-year-old son. I can still hear "Markie...hamma!" Moving the 3-week Cornish Xs took longer than expected, but it's nice to see them on pasture. Unfortunately, we're expecting 2" of rain this evening. I put some straw in...

    Vinyl siding on pasture pen?

I'm building a pasture pen and thought I'd use vinyl siding instead of aluminum or steel siding. Has anyone used vinyl siding? Does anyone foresee issues with this?

    Air chilling?

Has anyone air-chilled? Does it really make a noticeable difference? Is there any way an average Joe can do this without buying an expensive, commercial set-up? I'm interested in seeing for myself what the difference might be.

    Broken wings/legs from plucker?

A buddy and I built a whizbang. I've had some wings and legs get "broken." By this I mean the bones break through the skin. Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent this? Fyi...we used a 3/4 hp farm duty motor. Everything went according to plan when we built it except we added too many...

Full crop or not full crop?

I'm looking for advice regarding whether to withhold feed before butchering so the crops are empty or let them eat so the crops can be easily located and handled. I have received conflicting responses from my local chicken "experts." Thanks!
