    Help my build please

If you use a water heater thermostat, make sure you keep it near/about 3 inches from the light. This helps keep the temp regulated. It's fine to use. A wafer thermostat is better, but I have seen plenty of incubators with the water heater thermostat that were very successful, and stayed rather...

Can I help these chicks? Update

It's up to you on this one. I would. Here's a Answers.com suggestion, which I do nearly the same technique myself when worst comes to worst: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_can_you_help_a_chicken_egg_hatch

    Incubation failed...Help GOF 1588

Really, humidity depends on where you live. Has a lot to do with sea level, etc. My best solution has always been: 60-65% for the first 18 days, 80-85% for the last 3 days. Best way to really know is to watch the air sac. Make sure it's losing just enough each time you candle them. Here's a...

    runny pip

Sounds like you had too much humidity during your incubation. Sorry. Hope the rest come out better for you

    Pips on Day 19!?

It's all good! Congrats on the pips! This is normally caused by the temp being higher (101 at egg level). Nothing wrong with it. After this batch, try to calibrate your thermometer of course for future hatches.

    Adding more water during lockdown?

That's fine. You can do that. If you have to open your bator, try to close it back up quickly. Some people use a spray bottle and spray a mist in the bator before they shut it, which helps keep the humidity level.

gogo10131, Do you only have one humidity meter in your bator? Might try to calibrate the one(s) you're using now. Adding a second if you only have one will also help. Any time you use a digital meter, they can vary during different readings. For example, if it's at 10%, it could be off by 5...

I'm not able to post any pictures due to the fact I'm on vacation at this time, and wont be back until Sunday. My son is home with the birds now taking care of them. The roosters I have are very colorful. They are quiet, and friendly. I wash my birds about 2 times a year, due to the fact that I...

    baby chick coughing

How about their eyes, are they seem to be watery? Might be a respiratory infection. I would contact the store where you purchased them, and ask them if any of their other customers have experienced this. They may be able to get you some new chicks to replace these ones. You'll need to clean...

Today I learned: toes will come off baby sultans very easily

My experience has always been pecking at the toes. Usually a larger breed does that to them. I always put my bantams in different brooders now, which has stopped that from happening. (Of course, this was about 10 years ago when all of this happened).

the smell!?! Any tips? Give them a bath?

You may need to get them a bigger brooder. They should have plenty of room to go around, and do their deeds while scratching most of it up for you. Deep litter is a good method, but you need the space for them to help you out. Otherwise, you're going to be the only one working. After all...

Need advice for final touches to my coop/nesting box floor material.

Pine shavings will work. I personally like and use stray, as it's a softer material and helps prevent the eggs from cracking. You could put a divider in that box, and make it two nest boxes (12 inches width is fine).

    Ghetto-fied coop by the hubby...

Excellent idea on using materials you all ready had. Keep a eye out for stuff to cover it better for the winter, to help keep them warm and the wind from blowing in too much

Can I turn my incubator off for 20 minutes?

You'll be fine doing that. Just make sure they don't brake by movement, and try to cover the incubator up with a blanket or other material to keep the air from blowing in which will cool the eggs faster. Have a safe trip!

    how long

Most would say no longer then 10 days. I prefer 6 days myself, as this seems to do best for me.
