My 5ish year old bantam hen started to seem to lose her voice about a week ago - couldn't seem to get any sound out. Then one day she fell over once, so I checked her and couldn't find anything wrong. The next morning I found her on the floor on her side, as if her right leg hurt or just had...
I have a 5-6ish year old Wyandotte hen. About a week ago she seemed to lose her voice - making quiet wheezy noises instead of usual chirps (but not actually wheezing).
Now she's walking very slowly as if her legs are giving out. Doesn't eat but touches her beak to the food as if she can't...
I found my year old Pekin bantam dead in her nest today, on her side but with no sign of anything wrong, except her crop was empty. One side of her head was a bit red with less feathers than the other - is it possible that one hard blow to the head in the right place could have killed her?
How...
Black is a Calder Ranger. We've had her for about a year now and I think she's about 4 years old. She's always had a slightly redder abdomen than the others but it didn't seem to irritate her or be any problem. Recently it's been slightly swollen and redder than usual, looks painful but...
Going to buy and convert a shed for my six chickens.
Which bedding is best to use - straw, wood shavings, etc?
And do wooden floors get damp/mouldy? Would it be better to put a plastic sheet down first and then bedding?
Thanks!
I was just wondering if anyone makes their own chicken food, and if it's cheaper that way? If not, which feed do you find is the best and cheapest for layers? Thanks!
Please post pictures of your shed-coop conversions!
Thinking about buying a shed for my chickens - they need a new house - and I want to see what you do inside!
Show me your Pekins!
Here are my two Pekin bantams, Mint (left) and Parsley (right)
I know it's a rubbish picture, but they move so fast! I think they were hatched in Spring. They're called Mint and Parsley because they came in fresh herb boxes for mint and parsley xD Minty has already laid...
We're going to get a shed for our chickens, and since we only have six we're thinking of splitting it in two and using one half for the perches and the other for the food and bedding, with a divider in between (so the chickens can't get into the food and the food can't get into the chickens)...
I have three bantams, one older one, Soup, and two young ones (Pekins), Mint and Parsley. Minty is pecking both Soup (who is about three times her size!) and Parsley, every time they go to perch at night.
Parsley is being pecked the most. She's very small and shy of the other chickens, and...
I have three Calder Ranger hens. Today I found one of these just standing under the nesting box with her head drawn into her body, just standing there. She chirped slightly when I walked over but stayed put. I stroked her and she walked out slowly and very calmly over to the others. She was a...
