I was going to suggest 4 nesting boxes, although that may be futile if your chickens are like mine, and all decide to use the same one. I watched my neighbor's chickens for a week, he has 16 chickens and 4 nest boxes, and one nest box never had any eggs in it, two of them would have one or two...
Oh no, they have multiple swimming areas. They've got a giant kiddie pool that's big enough for all of them to jump in and swim around, plus a smaller rubber tub that's big enough for three ducks to get in at once, and a shallower area they can play and splash in, not deep enough to truly swim...
I meant to answer the question earlier about what kind of landscaping people had for their ducks...my ducks have annihilated my landscaping! They love tearing up wet grass, especially around all the downspouts. When they spend all their time doing this:
My yard now looks like this:
I don't think I've seen those magpies around where I am. We do, however, have an absolute ton of crows/ravens. I asked about them a while ago in this thread because they seem to hang around and I don't like them. The general consensus was that they're good to have around because they chase off...
My ducks did great this past winter and we had several stretches where the temp got into the negative 20s/30s at night and only warmed up to single digits during the day. They had a nice snug house with a deep bed of straw which they slept in at night but during the day they were out and about...
@BreInFlannel regarding looking for ducklings, I got my ducklings from Murdochs (in Kalispell). They had quite a few different kinds, Rouens and Blue Swedish for sure. Murdochs had a schedule for what days they were expected to get in which breeds of chicks, ducklings, turkeys, etc. It was...
Which breeds of chickens have you all found do the best in the snow? Mine all come out to free range, even though they don't have many places to go, but there's definitely different tolerances of snow among them. My two white Orpingtons are the most fearless about snow. They're always the first...
Exactly how I'm feeling right now, as I head outside to shovel paths AGAIN, knowing I will have to do it again tonight, and tomorrow morning, and tomorrow night...
For those of you in NW Montana, how are you doing with all this snow we've been getting the past few days? And even more is forecasted through Tuesday!
I have mixed feelings about the crows/ravens. I read on here that they're good to have around, but they seem a little too interested in my peeps. Seems like whenever I let my birds out, the ravens show up and start hanging around. I haven't seen them trying to harass the chickens, but it makes...
Are any of you Montanans having trouble lately with all the big birds eyeballing your flock? It seems like it's a constant battle to keep my peeps from becoming a buffet for some hungry predator. In the last week, an osprey was hanging around; a hawk dive bombed the flock right at the front...
@Bantambird that is an absolutely adorable picture! I never knew turkeys could be so nice. The only ones I've been around were my aunt's, and they were pretty mean!
BigSkyBird, my setup is close to what you're describing. My coop is an 8x8 shed with a little door out to a 12x15 run. My run isn't covered but I don't get as much snow as other places in Montana. We got about 2 feet this year.
Everyone ventured out today since it got up to a whopping 10 degrees. Sweet Caroline got off the shoveled path and wasn't sure what to do!
Vidalia has a no nonsense approach to everything in life, including snow.
I let mine decide whether or not to come out. The older chickens who have experienced snow before, will come out, but the younger birds who haven't, stay in the house. One of the young ones followed the older ones yesterday so I think they'll get the hang of it. I'm sure they'll all eventually...
Six of my chickens will come out in the snow. They'll follow the shoveled paths to the porch and take dirt baths underneath where it's clear of snow, and they'll explore the plowed driveway and peck for scratch. The other chickens stand at the door to the coop, think for a second, and change...

These ones are available next month, a little older than you specified but seem like really nice birds.

Here's an ad on your local craigslist that looks good. Are you looking for any certain breed of chicken? There were several other ads for pullets in the age range that you want, these ones just seemed the most handled and tamest. I know some...
