    Old and Rare Breeds

I think people bred what they liked... and of course what grew well where they were located..... taking into account their management choices. Like I think in lots of the Nordic areas the birds were kept inside, in a barn, or even in the kitchen all winter long. Just sayin' that is the only...

yep, climate is a huge factor in picking breeds.

I have to have breeds with clean feet, tiny combs, and small to no wattles. After trying a number of breeds I currently have: Dominiques. Pretty excellent, and from a historical standpoint the best historical USA breed. Leghorns. Can't beat their egg laying. I have them in Rose Comb, but...

perfectly put. I very much wanted Nankins, super historical, great personalities, blah, blah... turns out that when they were bred in England they must have been kept in kitchen cupboards or something. NOT cold hardy. So I didn't get them since I didn't want house chickens.

You get decently cold and windy in Nebraska, right? Do they do alright in your temps, or do you provide a heated coop? I very much wanted Nankins, but everyone I talked to said that they would not do well in below freezing temps.

I have never had those, but love everything I have read about them. Do you run both rose comb and single comb together?

I have never tried using the Vaseline... I have heard that it can get messy very fast. My single comb birds, just the roosters, tend to have their thin points on the comb freeze off, and the front edge of their wattles. But always mild enough that they have required no treatment. (Because of...

That sounds like a perfect temp. For Nankins. I am in a warm part of Alaska, I almost never get below -20. ;)

There is a nankin thread here on BYC, but yes it isn't very active. Nankins are an excellent breed! I had wanted to breed them, but everyone told me that they wouldn't do well in my cold (and I don't heat my coop). What climate do you live in?

For Dorkings for a cold climate... I think rose comb dorkings from yellow house farm would be your best bet.

Please, experienced breeders, I need some input... It is my understanding that light brown leghorns and dark brown leghorns were originally the same color, but that the pullet line and the cockerel line for brown leghorns were then simply separated out. If I breed dark brown and light brown...

I am going to try to start being a proper breeder this year. I am starting with three breeds, going to see what I like and hopefully weed down to one or two. I am a little worried since the only quality breeder of golden laced hamburgs who has responded to me, has gone over how aggressive...
