I've been gone forever, but I have to update you guys... Gerdie is on day 27 or 28 of sitting and tonight I can hear the little goslings inside their shells! She's on 9 eggs!
USUALLY the honk is reliable. The gander has the high-pitched trumpet and the goose has the low-pitched grunt. It has been true in every goose I've been up close with. Ganders also tend to hold their neck more vertical with their head much higher.
We live out in the boonies so 4-H isn't a realistic thing for us, but he loves critters! I don't think I'll hatch goslings because I'll end up wanting to keep them all!
Yup, Herdie is in fine form right now also! Silly boy thinks he can sneak up on me..... it's a good thing I love him! But you would think he would be tired of me pinning him down by now? LOL
You'll probably be able to tell when Trina is getting ready to start laying. You'll see her building the nest, and it's a several hours long process. My gander also paces outside of the coop the entire time my goose is inside actively laying, like an expectant daddy at the hospital! Make sure...
Thanks! They have a swimming pool in there in the summer and I've got gardens all around it to provide shade. It seems to work out well and gives them plenty of room to roam, but I still let them out when I'm outside to keep an eye on them. :)
I just had to share this picture. Herdie is my guard goose, but I never expected him to chase off the moose! Of course, it only worked once... now the moose sleep right next to him (other side of the fence), and he does NOT like it one bit! Poor guy... that's part of life in Alaska! LOL
I agree with Miss Lydia... wait it out! As long as they aren't fighting, there's no need for them to be best friends immediately! Trina has spent her whole life being the only goose, and probably doesn't know what the heck he is! Mating season will change everything!
