Interesting. I had a white hatched that was blue eyed.. she had a tiny patch of lavender like your fella has the chocolate. He is a beauty! Can't wait to see this one mature.

He can handle several. Most hens can fly away from the drake tho, unless her wing is trimmed.

your black is a drake, the pied I am not sure. Pretty large duck, but the face is making me question being a drake. Ducks rarely pass 5 pounds. Drakes can go up to 15 pounds.

The huff puff sounds are conversation. I know it sounds aggressive, but they really are just talking. the pant nibbling is curiosity and a social action. They also head bob, raise the crests on their heads, wag their tails. If a Muscovy is acting aggressively, it holds its mouth open, and...

We have had some terrible drake fights here, so I only keep one with my girls now. I let them hatch and also incubate. Usually the broodies have a much better rate than I do. Drakes have long sharp nails, and will rip and tear off feathers. Never had one attack me but have stopped several...

I would lance it. Be sure to drain completely, if its not drained it wont heal. Brooding ducks can get weak from sitting so her health could be easily compromised. Thats just my choice, you have to decide if the duck is most important or her eggs. If you return her to her nest she will likely...

    Duck Breed Focus - Muscovy

May be a fluke, but I have found Scovy hens are very territorial and most won't accept a duckling they didn't brood. It may very well be the smells and scent of the unknown children caused the mothers to reject the ducklings. I have had incubated duckling hatched at the same time one of the...

    Duck Breed Focus - Muscovy

Males are much larger! My average weight for a hen is 5-6 pounds. Most hens will go broody with a good sized clutch, that can be 8 or 20! I prefer letting ducks brood. Muscovy eggs are a little harder to incubate than our mallard derived species like pekin, rouen etc.. If they do hatch, they...

Depending on your climate of course, and temps. Usually they are getting frozen here, or too cold. If I can't do my usual 3x a day collecting a lot won't hatch. The other issue is if the ducks are allowing drakes to breed yet. Some of my girls just were not having it in March.

I have 2 rippled black hens in that pattern, its normal. I am so sorry, painful to lose flock members. Was the duck brooding? Even if not I would suspect parasites or worms in both cases. Great news on the broody!!!!! Early season eggs rarely hatch, don't feel bad.

Oh yes, broody is sure the word! Some ducks will get very aggressive towards other ducks, and will steal each others eggs. They also fight over the drake everyone likes. Honestly its a pecking order just like chickens have. I have never seen ducks hurt each other, but drake fights can be awful...

She is guarding the nest, and her eggs. I have 2 duck hens that do it. Overnight is not long enough for the embryo to begin development from what I understand.

I have had a few hens that ran large. I questioned them almost all the way up to the following season! Especially in the wild types it seems. Excited for your pips, I have a week left until mine are due!
