Chronicles of Raising Meat Birds - Modern Broilers, Heritage and Hybrids

I put a squirt of Dawn in when I scald them, to improve penetration of the water through all the plumage to the skin. When I see a great big crop of dark pin feathers though, that's when I stop plucking and get out the skinning knife. The cost-benefit analysis has shifted. I like the skin on...

I don't know what happens (some kind of natural magic?) but after you do this butchering process several times, you just get faster. 🤷‍♀️ I am not conscious of doing anything differently or of having learned any new tricks, but suddenly butchering poultry is not more difficult, nor more...

Someone posted on another topic wanting to know how long it would take for her diamond earring to pass through her hen. I believe the title was something like "The $500 Chicken." Apparently the very costly chicken is still in possession of the earring and is doing fine... I'm not likely to have...

Steroids can be lifesaving when you need them, but the side effects are hell. :hugs I've never had to take them but I used to work in nursing so I've seen how people suffer from steroids. We've mostly lost our weight by cutting out grains & sweets; not completely, but for the most part we just...

Us too! I lost 100lbs. DH lost 35. You think the thing that's gonna be the big deal is buying smaller clothes & allowing your family to include you in photos, but really, the big deal is completely how much better you feel! :celebrateCongratulations!!!

The Rangers are also breast-heavy. Last year I did both Ranger-types (Color Yield) and CX. The only difference I could see was that the CX were somewhat larger & more tender, but not by a great amount. DH loves breast; I don't care for it. It's okay in casseroles, etc. but dark meat has so...

I know! I love the wings. Growing up I was the only girl and always ended up with the wings for some reason. (First-born too, so whattheheck?) 🤷‍♀️😂 The crunchy, very flavorful wing tips are my favorite. Tossing the wings is just SO wrong! :lau :drool:love

It's tricky controlling yourself, though. :lau You can go through an AWFUL lot of apples snacking on those. I like them so dry they snap. 🥰🥰🥰 I went through a whole bushel in a couple weeks (DH was not interested in them at all, so that was just me alone.) 😳🤣

You're prolly not gonna have any left to freeze at that rate. :lau

Will you store this jerky in the freezer (like most of the recipes I've seen) or just in a cool basement/root cellar/etc.?

I add the (skinned & declawed) feet to the stock pot. If you scald the bird, the feet peel & declaw easily.

For the metal cones you have to get the next size up from what they say. 😕

I already bought the cones. Now ya tell me. :lau Actually, I buy kitty litter in large bags in case we spill oil on the garage floor or something. I never thought of the smaller plastic jugs as cones but if I had, my processing area could be even more hillbilly than it already is.:gig I did...

Higher biological life is probably not possible without E Coli. It belongs in the lower intestinal system though, and in its proper balance and the right types. Not in the water and certainly not in rare meat. One of many reasons we wash our hands after elimination. Also one big reason for clean...

People used to look at you askance if you admitted to liking and 🤯 actually eating chicken skin! Oh the humanity! Horrors! :lau I used to sneak-eat mine when no one was looking. 😅

Chronicles of Raising Meat Birds - Modern Broilers, Heritage and Hybrids

Mine does get hot enough, but cooking it beforehand prolly isn't a bad idea. I was thinking of trying some with ground turkey/chicken/etc. I do have the pink salt (not Himalayan—preserving) and a jerky gun I've yet to use... Is it ever safe to dehydrate ground poultry meat? I'm not a big...

I never heard of that. Cool! I'm in—next time I grill! So do you season after boiling/before grilling?

I always rest them until the joints are loose again. He's used to chicken meat having no texture at all. 🙄 People tend to like what they grew up on, I guess. But I also grew up on super-tender chicken. I dunno. I do put some effort into learning to like new things. He is not interested in that. 😂
