    That sounds a lot like what Dove is doing! She is acting fine and feisty as ever, just limping for no apparent reason. Her leg isn't swollen, and I picked her up and felt her joints and everything.

    -29?!?! Goodness, where do you live? Brrrrrrrrr Does anybody ever have hens limping becuz of the cold? I have a White Leghorn limping and she doesn't have bumble foot, frostbitten toes, or any roosters mating with her, I can't figure it out.

    It was 18 degrees this morning, I opened up the doors and only about 6 out of my 33 ventured out, and quickly went back in. I have some hens in a breeding pen that is not very covered, so I have a heat lamp in there for them and hoping they will be fine.....:/

    Well, the temps have dipped as low as 15° F so far, my poor chickens are having fun adjusting! Thankfully, it has been fairly mild here and I hope it stays that way! :fl

    My dad and I decided to put in electrical boxes for the coop, so I have electrical boxes that i would plug the lamps into.

    Does the light make their sleep patterns more restless? And can I leave it on all night? I do not think I can rig up a timer.

    That is a great idea! I bet they would stay occupied with that for hours on end! And it would be especially nice because they can not scratch the frozen ground. :D

    Hello, and welcome to the thread @chickens really! You sound like you have some good ideas to keep your chickens and ducks warm! I think ducks fare pretty well in the winter with my experience. On a different note, I found this thread that some of you may find useful, it seems like a good idea...

    I guess I will probably end up just doing that this winter then. I am on a tight budget, so not sure I can swing installing any fancy watering systems. I have heard that warm water freezes faster than cold. Read more about it in this link...

    They do not ever try to roost on them, or get into little spats and splash them everywhere?
