That sounds a lot like what Dove is doing! She is acting fine and feisty as ever, just limping for no apparent reason. Her leg isn't swollen, and I picked her up and felt her joints and everything.
-29?!?! Goodness, where do you live? Brrrrrrrrr
Does anybody ever have hens limping becuz of the cold? I have a White Leghorn limping and she doesn't have bumble foot, frostbitten toes, or any roosters mating with her, I can't figure it out.
It was 18 degrees this morning, I opened up the doors and only about 6 out of my 33 ventured out, and quickly went back in. I have some hens in a breeding pen that is not very covered, so I have a heat lamp in there for them and hoping they will be fine.....:/
Well, the temps have dipped as low as 15° F so far, my poor chickens are having fun adjusting! Thankfully, it has been fairly mild here and I hope it stays that way! :fl
That is a great idea! I bet they would stay occupied with that for hours on end! And it would be especially nice because they can not scratch the frozen ground. :D
Hello, and welcome to the thread @chickens really! You sound like you have some good ideas to keep your chickens and ducks warm! I think ducks fare pretty well in the winter with my experience. On a different note, I found this thread that some of you may find useful, it seems like a good idea...
I guess I will probably end up just doing that this winter then. I am on a tight budget, so not sure I can swing installing any fancy watering systems. I have heard that warm water freezes faster than cold. Read more about it in this link...
