I have several going into lockdown. Got a couple of cute photos as I did a last candle/check. You can see the head and beak in one, and, a couple are way down past the pencil line, close to pipping into the air sac! I just may have a couple of early hatchers.
I do the same. Try and figure out first, which ones may be a roo. Not supposed to have them here, but I have kept the more quiet ones...until they are more vocal. In the meantime, they act like the man I want them to be. 😁. I get free fertile eggs for a while.
Looks like I'm coming up on ten years here on BYC. Sure has been a fun experience. I've learned oodles! Seems like just the other day. Have met some great folks in here!

Ok Ron...here ya go. It's getting old, but still works like a charm. :) Made from a big ol bean can. Then hubby put a handle from a lamp to hold it in place while I candle. I put a hand towel on the drawer to protect the wood on the drawer. Plus it keeps the lamp tight.
Wise desicion on both... sperate bators, but waiting to candle..just in case. We've all had..happy surprises at times, even when we think all is lost. And yes..those dark eggs, darn it, are hard to see any movement. Have to wait until the second week to hope to see anything hopefully. Good...
You want to see the air sac. Helps you see what's happening with it. Then when lockdown comes, you will want to mark the sir sac. I always like setting my eggs with the higher point of the sir sac up..or, if it's a saddle shaped air sac, I'll place it with the high sides ..to the sides. Hope...
