great thread. im not surprised the cal/nz cross out did the SF. hard to beat something at its own game. keep us informed on the actual carcasses. my guess there will be more compact thick meat on the cross than the sf. perhaps even more internal fat in the sf than the cross. that is...

I do not know what the cross would work out for you since you sell to a commercial processor. I am wanting to breed the SF buck to the Cal/NZ doe the next time around in January. You can check back in Feb. to see what the cross looks like (hopefully).

my guess would be mostly...
i myself am always interested in this type of thing. alot to learn from a thread of this caliber.....not just mundane chit chat, but actual education. good stuff
i know last winter, my pure NZ buck lost interest in breeding, but it was later in the winter, he was young and rather *ahem* vigorous during the spring summer, fall... and im assuming the light had something to do with it...i culled him, i dont tolerate that kinda nonsense...i had a pure...
the bucks should be breeding or wanting to breed, by 14-15 wks of age. thats early, but the faster maturing ones will be riding the other rabbits. by 4 months they need to be seperated. cause they will breed............at one yr of age, and not breeding...something is wrong. he may be a she.

I wouldn't count on it. Love crazed bucks are pretty blind. Their shenanigans are why breedings are well attended here. You can usually hear laughter coming from the barn on those days. Silly bucks.
and thats a reason why im observing. sometimes you gotta push the ol boy...
Snow, this is my method. i put the doe in with the buck. usually he jumps right on it. if she doesnt accept him with in the first minute, usually she wont. if she refuses him in the next 5 min. i take her out, and try again the next day or so.
ive never had a doe be picky about what buck...
ive never learned the palpatation method,,,never practiced as you suggested either. be a good trick to learn.
i test breed every doe, every breeding. ive not had a problem as of yet. but ive read before what you posted, so no doubt it can occur as stated.

Thanks for your two cents. I appreciate all comments. I can not wait to see how this works out either. I love the SF and their laid back way. The CA/NZ mix is not as laid back or friendly. I have no mean rabbits they are just alittle more stand offish then the SF. I am hoping that...
i use the AM. CHins as a cross. to the NZ. at 1/2s they are good. good growth, and feed conversion. bred 3/4 to the NZ side, they are even better. same time frame of growth, but a more solid build. better quanitiy of meat.
now you take the breeding the other direction, 3/4 to the chin...
id say its going to be hard to catch that calif.XNz cross. theyve been bred for to long to be a master at their trade. but i await an update eagerly. i hope you continue with the weighins up to 12 wks of age.
the SF are beautiful. perhaps a lil Nz blood crossed with them and breed toward the...
