mystery illness not responding to treatments

Many times we will never know what the illness is even when we spend big money on vets and necropsies. Think of all the causes of death in humans but in these cases the patient can not tell us the symptoms. All we can do is the best we can do.

Excellent news! thanks for the update. Don't make the mistake I made on my first scope, be sure to get one with a moving platform. It might be called a table but moves the slide in four directions, Had I known we were going to do so many exams I probably would have gotten one with a viewing...

I would restrict the hard to digest food like nuts and seeds, soaked seeds are ok. You are supplying a good variety and he somehow knows which feeds are good for him. Watch closely the amount of feed and measure the water intake, as a full crop may deter him from eating as much. Krill oil and...

mystery illness not responding to treatments

I am pretty well at a loss as to what is causing this sickness. The intestine and cecal pouches looked healthy to me, not heavily tumored or cancerous like I would see in a bird that has the common cocci, blackhead, or worm load. Only the black kidney tells me there was something wrong with...

I still think the black liver is key. Whether it was an infection or something else, I think the kidney worked overtime, causing failure. It may have been sepsis.

With the exception of the liver the organs look remarkably good. Nothing like I expected to see. That liver is extremely dark and probably holds the clue. Let's flag @casportpony she loves this stuff.

I like to cut from vent to throat and splay out the bird without disturbing the organs so I can assure myself that I did not accidentally tear the esophagus when tube feeding letting feed into the chest cavity. From there I inspect each organ from top down. The heart and liver may have yellow...

I know that depressing feeling when you try so hard only for them to show a little improvement and then turn for the worse. You did everything you could but the organ damage is just too far gone to absorb nutrients. I have turned a bit callous to losing birds only because I have hundreds and...

mystery illness not responding to treatments

In the past I definitely have had some very slow to heal. I feel like a broken record harping about the damage that cocci does to the intestines and cecal pouches. Organ damage is not only slow to heal but some damage is carried for life causing poor health and slow development. Cocci is...

Sorry you have little recourse at this point. Even with $17. exams available to me plus a 25 mile trip to the vet I decided to start doing my own fecal exams. I assume you have thought about it too, perhaps this will motivate you to buy the microscope. I probably do more exams for my...

mystery illness not responding to treatments

You have good instincts, follow them. Being so far removed from your situation it is easy to tell you to sacrifice the bird for the good of the flock but that may not end with the information you need right now. I think that continuing the five day treatment will help more than stopping that...

mystery illness not responding to treatments

That is a sticky wicket you are up against. You didn't mention any birds dying so I assume you are on top of the situation. Blackhead is a quick killer and the birds normally die within a couple of days after showing symptoms, cocci takes only a few more days for them to pass. I am only...
