This is my first year hatching and my intent was to fill the freezer for the year as well. Now I have a zillion chickens running around and I keep procrastinating on the "freezer" part. I wasn't planning on them being so stinking friendly. Now I can't find it in me to get the axe out. Oh well.

They are so pretty. How cold do you get at night up there? I just put my 6 and 7 Week Olds out full time but we are right on the coast so it's in the 40 's at night. They seem fine but all 8 of them can cuddle if needed.

They were in cut-down egg cartons because they were shipped eggs and had really bad air cells. If they weren't in such rough shape I would have just layed them on their sides.

Awesome. Sounds like things are going well. My chicks follow me too. They especially like the flashlight, which is really annoying when you are trying to look at a specific egg and they all come barreling over to see you and knock the egg over so you can't see it anymore.

Final tally is in. 30 perfect healthy chicks out of 33 hatched. Most on day 22/23. I did assist several but no leg or feet problems at all. Man, I needed that big-time after my horrible shipped egg experiences. These were all my own flocks eggs. Out of the 3 that died 2 were probably day...

I think it might be the time of year. Mine always start early but this time I didn't get a single pip until the morning of day 21. It's the end of day 22 now and so far 14 out with tons of pips and zips.

Shipped eggs can be tough. Little Giants can be tough. First time hatches can be tough. You don't take the easy route in life do you?

Well hopefully they are just dormant trying to recover. That's always how my hatches are too. If I set 20 eggs hoping for 20 chicks, only 3 hatch. If I set 50 eggs hoping for 20 chicks, 48 hatch.

How are your eggs? What a bummer. Mine have gone up to 108 before and they were fine. It was only for about an hour though.

Thats awesome. You are doing way better than I did on my first hatch. Don't forget to mark your air cells. It will help a lot when you set them for lockdown.

I just lift the lid, grab them out one at a time into an egg carton, then close the incubator. I candle/weigh/mark as needed, then one by one they go back into the bator. I wouldn't just stand there with the lid off. You would loose a lot of heat that way. If they are shipped eggs be very...
