This is only in my experience that side by side, boy vs girl new chicks, the girls sprout their tail feathers first and then the boys. The pic shows on this 4-week-old, pretty short tail feathers compared to my 4-week-old OEs.
I thought it was someone on this thread that was talking about feather-sexing new chicks. But I went back and couldn't find the info.
I don't know if I just got lucky last year when I feather-sexed 3 mixed breed baby chicks using the technique of looking at the wing tip between days 1 and 5 and...
Wow! What an amazing success. How did you figure out they were shrink wrapped and assist?
Well, I know from all my reading that humidity is SO important in a hatch, hence the lockdown. The other 4 chicks pipped and zipped out within an hour each and of the remaining 3, only one had started...
Update on my high drama hatch:
All seven OE babies have started eating and drinking. Even the weakling is much stronger and doing what all the others are doing. To those who haven't followed, I had to assist 3 eggs after my cat tipped over the cage, including the incubator that was in the cage...
Years ago we had one lone female goose who would lay eggs and sometimes hide them and go broody. We knew she had been setting on them a long time, so we finally were going to take care of them when she got off the nest for a break and my daughter and I reached down to start putting them in a...
Thanks for asking, Rainbow. All of the chicks are doing really well The last one I helped out is still fairly weak, but drank some nutri drench and is staying under the heat plate. I keep checking on it and it can walk around, but mostly is just sleeping. The rest of them are adorable and acting...
High drama in the middle of the night with my hatch. Everything was zipping right along, pun intended. Four of seven babies were out and under the hot plate, it was 2:30 am, and a lull in the action, so I decided to lay down on the couch right by the dog cage that held the incubator and the hot...
Hatch update: Sitting here with a glass of wine, not popcorn, lol. I now have two baby chicks out. Once they pip, they are zipping right out. I did reach in and remove the shells and throw in a couple of wet sponges. It's so crowded in this little mini. Here's the first chick giving...
Olive eggers. Although, my f1 olive egger mama of five of these eggs is in with two roos and this little one might be part SFH instead of blue Marans. I see a little white that wouldn't be there if daddy was the dark blue marans. It is what it is. The other two light green eggs are EE hen with...
OMG!!! The first chick is already here!!! I just went down to check to see if any more had pipped and this little guy was chirping like mad and thrashing around. I started hollering for my husband to come look. Amazingly quick. I noticed the pip only about an hour ago and here he is!!!! Here SHE...
I've got my first external pip, so things are right on schedule. Tomorrow is hatch day and it's looking pretty close. So far, no complaints with the Brinsea mini advanced. Also, I learned that using surgical gloves for handling them to candle kept them from slipping from my hands really well...
I put my OE eggs in lockdown this morning. First timer here with an incubator. Beyond excited!!! I wanted to see an internal pip before I did that, but they had lost more weight than the recommended amount of 13% to 16%, so I maxed out the water reservoirs and stopped the turning and now am...
