If you were really a grammer Nazi you'd have known the F should be capitalized as well-Mille Fleur

Frostbite doesn't affect fertility but it is very painful & it does affect the birds desire to mate. Once the injury heals everything's back to normal.

Can't imagine the circumstances where a bird in mid-molt would become a show champion. IMO such a bird should be left home.

Here in the North East Old English Game large fowl aren't all that rare. In 2004 the APA National was held in Syracuse NY & there was a class of 170 large fowl games. I judged a show last Sunday & there were at least 30 large Games-there were another dozen or so in the Junior Show. Large fowl...

Maybe people who decide to show chickens [or undertake any other new activity] should do some homework first. That said, it would seem that the word "show" suggests the birds should be made to look their best.

That is remarkable isn't it. A poultry show is nothing more than a beauty contest so it always surprises me when i see birds that are so far out of show condition being shown. I judged a show this past Sunday & there were some birds entered that I'd have been embarassed to have seen in my barn...

Maybe olive oil will inhibit frostbite in Tennessee but not here in northern New York where it gets down to 30 below zero.

Very valid point about the wild birds. I've asked people who say they follow strict bio-security rules how they get the Sparrows to put on the little paper booties.

I feed a 22% Game Bird Grower exclusively & have never had any leg problems with my Andalusians or any other breed. Several people I know use a similar feeding program w/no leg problems.

Apparently some people thought I was serious about this-guess I should have added a smiley face. People on this site are forever insisting that a "good roo" will fight off preditors attacking the flock. This is, of course, ridiculous. The "good roo" that tries will just be the first chicken eaten.

If you had a "good Roo" he'd protect your birds from the 'coon. I know that's true as I've read it here several times.

I try to duck the Feather Legged Bantam class whenever possible because of trhe Silkies: I'm not sure they're chickens either. I can only speak to the shows where I'm involved in operating the show. We don't allow people to clerk classes where they have birds entered. They can clerk other...

Some people have a romantic fascination with scorecard judging but they fail to realize that those points were awarded by judges just as human as judges today. All the same prejudices & subjective interpretations applied. Judgeing poultry isn't like grading a math test, it is subjective, not...
