My three Barred Rocks started at 24 weeks in August 2015....even though it is now winter up here in Paradise, CA (34 degrees this morning) I usually get three eggs every two days. Placing an empty tub of KFC near their coop seems to have worked....
Finally, my third of three Barred Rocks, Alice, who was the runt of the flock, laid her first egg! All three hens delivered today for the first time! And she belted out a very nice song afterwards to let us know she had come through. 27 weeks old. Her waddles and comb are just now turning red...
Well, today we got our first LARGE egg! Yesterday, Pojo, who usually laid an egg a day, took a day off. Eggs to that point were medium size, if that. Today she laid a BIG egg, easily large! Good girl!
Our Rocks started about 10 days ago...today both laying hens decided they needed to lay at the same time...but prefer the ONE nesting box...so one was on top of the other...when I saw the first egg drop I grabbed it....now she is loudly clucking! Been 10 minutes...
My two laying Barred Rocks have a system going on....Pockey goes first (about 8 a.m.), while Pojo paces about, clucking, waiting her turn. We have to nest boxes but they both use the same one....so I have to be on my feet to get the first egg in the morning, because Pojo will lay right on top of...
I tried using golf balls....hens ending up playing golf...JK....once they lay, remove the fakes because hens aren't too smart sometimes, and may crack an egg against the fake ones.
Yep, got two this morning! Unfortunately, since the two hens favor the same box, one egg got slightly cracked....but the eggs are getting bigger. Pojo produces bigger eggs than "Squawky" but give them time, I guess. Alice is still on the sidelines...guess she's management...
Probably had an argument with his favorite girl...happens all the time. Just pop a beer with him and listen to his complaints...then sing "Sweet Adeline:" together.
This morning was a first! One hen in the nest, the other pacing around, waiting her turn! They usually each lay on different days...tag team egging...hopefully we will get two today instead of the usual one....they seem to favor one nesting box....
So weird....three days straight, got an egg a day between the hens....then, this morning, found a shell-less egg under the perch in the coop....not sure if the little hen is finally laying, or the two bigger birds just had a bad night....never heard of laying during the night...
I tried interrogating them, but they just kept repeating "I reserve the right not to answer on the grounds that it might incinerate me..." I have a barbecue within eyesight.
Got our third egg in three days! The two big hens were cackling to beat the band this morning...wouldn't shut up....when I checked the box at 11 a.m., there was a nice light brown egg waiting for me. So two light brown eggs and one darker brown egg over the last three days...I guess the two big...
I'm not sure who laid the first egg yesterday, but one of the hens went into the nesting box and was nosing around...missing something, maybe? Funny thing is that she seems to have laid off on bossing the little hen around today....maybe chickens get PMS?
Well, my three buzzards turn 24 weeks in four days...they aren't exhibiting any egg laying initiative at all...no squatting, etc. I think the major egg producers are silently downloading messages from satellite to my hens telling them not to lay until the price of eggs hits $7 a...
Gave the little buzzards (22 weeks) a nice dog crate filled with pine shavings and golf balls to entice them. Became their spa....nothing yet. Time for some tough love....a stern lecture and an empty KFC container with an arrow pointing into it, with a sign stating...."you're next..."
