Developing My Own Breed Of Large Gamefowl For Free Range Survival (Junglefowl x Liege)

The thing is…disease really comes from agriculture/domestication/humans living in societies. Sure…there are natural wild diseases but generally those are either mild or they burn out quickly. Generally the diseases that we have in humans and livestock comes from people and domestic animals...

A few years back we had a VERY warm winter all the way into December. Then a cold spell hit and it was like throwing a switch from summer to winter and I lost all my pure Grey and Ceylon Jungle Fowl and most of my high percentage crosses. They had all survived much colder temperatures in the...

I like that tail! That’s one of the downsides of the pure Asian Games is even if they have a bit of tail the angle ruins it. Somewhere on-line there’s a picture of a bird with just the most spectacular tail I’ve ever seen on a chicken. Matter-of-fact…it’s on my library somewhere stolen off of...

Not likely pure Red Jungle Fowl. Most of the birds sold as pure Reds are crosses. The only pure strain are the Richardson Strain and only the lines that were very meticulously maintained. A lot of people have “San Diego Zoo Strain” and they were abandoned by the zoo because too many people kept...

I missed the details of the Marek’s outbreak but I was wondering if certain breeds were more susceptible or unaffected? I know some people have reported having multiple breeds and only having one of their breeds affected. They say basically all backyard flocks carry Marek’s.

Reds are by far the easiest followed by Greys, then Ceylons and by far the hardest are Greens. That’s also pretty much the order of how much cold they can take. The Greens need a special diet but not the others. Here’s a 50% Grey:

Every bird in my breeding program has some O Shamo in them now. That was to bring up the size of the birds and their eggs and it absolutely helps to keep them closer to the ground. The only pure O Shamo that I have is one hen and she took the longest to even be able to fly up to the top of the...

See MY problem is the opposite. I want my birds to roost in the BARN! My birds already can fly like you wouldn’t believe. I find this thread interesting but I’m actually trying to breed back to birds that are LESS wild.

They are expensive and hard to find but any big poultry project will cost you a ton of money.

Where do you live that you need permits for Greys and Ceylons?

All my birds have that kind of sense and they do a good job at keeping away from predators but I’ll tell you the eggs are hard to find. Some will lay in the barn but a lot of them lay their eggs in the bushes and either I find them and don’t know how old they are or I just find a pile of egg...

I don’t think it’s being raised in isolation as much as many generations of selective breeding for overly aggressive behavior. No animals in nature just fight to the death any time one male meets the other. It’s not even a good strategy for the victor if he is so wounded that he is more easily...

Honestly early on is the time to play fast and loose with bringing in birds. This is when you have the least investment and you are trying to bring in various genes. I don’t agree that the most aggressive birds are the best free rangers. Wild Jungle fowl are the most adapted for being wild but...

Developing My Own Breed Of Large Gamefowl For Free Range Survival (Junglefowl x Liege)

I was just listening to a podcast that interviewed a poultry researcher from the University of Ohio. She said that they have a research flock of Egyptian Fayoumi that not only seem immune to Marek’s but extremely resistant to most viruses and bacterial diseases. They tried to cross them with...
