It was all in the sterilite drawer system....previously they loved it. But it was too much. And, before I had newspaper and such for them to crawl out upon, but I had removed all of that. So they had virtually no choice but to roast. I do have other survivors, in various stages... Maybe half or...

No mold....just a perfect storm of too much food and optimal insulation (previously only beneficial). They were able to heat up (from eating) and retain all of that heat. The pumpkin was fine....in fact, I had cleared the frass the night before. I was trying to get some old stuff used up, so I...

AGH! I gave my mealies a mini pumpkin feast. They started eating, and got their metabolism going so well that they heated up and cooked themselves. What the heck?! How have my human children survived my hand of death?! And I won't even mention the Venus Flytrap and African Violet.

My 10k mealies are supplies me with wonderful frass! The last thing I fed them was a bunch of kale, it is nearly gone (even the stems!) and they are producing green frass! I'm going to have to decide which plant I like best!

My wigglers are here!!!! The box weighed a little under 8lbs, and the concentration of worms is pretty heavy. Does 2 pounds of substrate and 5lbs of worms sound about right? I'm not sure that I'm up for sifting all of the substrate out to check. >_<

Just checked, and it was sold by the pound, so that should be easy....I just need to separate the bedding to get the worm weight. (5#)

That's good advice, thanks! They sure fooled me! Their company is located in Raleigh, NC, and Uncle Jim's is in PA. I would never have guessed!

Evemfoster, that is great info! I think that the only issue I have with small pieces is that they tend to "leak" more water, but that could possibly be resolved by allowing them to sit on a towel for a bit first. Hubs and I moved them to a warmer wall, so that should keep their temp much more...

    Mealworm farming

So I found a place (earthworms4sale) that had the same price as Uncle Jim's, so I ordered them on Sunday. It said they were supposed to ship out on Monday, but I didn't get an email, tracking update, nothing. I emailed on Tuesday and heard nothing back. Hubs called on Wednesday and they answered...

Right, the larvae is 10 weeks....but how much of that 10 weeks is spent in the 1 inch long stage? (Or even 3/4-1" long)?

    Mealworm farming

Another question: If the life stage spent in the mealworm state is ten weeks, how many of those weeks are they at approximately full size? In other words, does it take them most of that time to get to full size and then they pupate soon after, or do they reach a good size 6 weeks or so in, and...

I'd maybe try to stick it under. Having it on the side probably won't do much, unless you have them covered and have a way to contain the heat. Just make sure it doesn't cover the whole bottom, so they have a way to get away if it is too warm.
