My main question is do I trust the built in thermometer.. if it is reading 99.5 is it actually 99.5 or way off?
Another one, some of you have said that the temp fluctuates when the incubator is tilted.. should I just hand turn instead of tilting the entire machine then?
Jmc,
How am I...
Thanks for the replies everyone and nice website Jim.
Toxic chicken - You mention the thermal layers, I thought the point of a forced air incubator was so that the temp throughout is even all over, unlike a still air?
So, when I incubate in this thing should I just set the built in thermometer...
Okay, so both of your thermometers in the brinsea are innaccurate then?
I don't have a spot check, so how am I supposed to check if the thermometer in mine is correct?
PS, when I got mine and turned it on, it settled at about 101, and I fiddled with the knob until it read 99.5 or so.
Thanks guys. :)
So, essentially I just bought this incubator as my homemade one was cooking them, and now you're telling me that these are innacurate and cook them too...fantastic. Sigh.
I thought that Brinsea "factory calibrated" them? And quote the booklet " All Brinsea incubators are...
Definitely a backyarder! The daddy to these guys is perhaps a Brahma X something so definitely NOT for showing considering that they're mutts . Seems a little awkward to walk without a toe on the outside though, good thing they've got the back one for balance!
How are your eggs doing? Did you...
Hawkeye i'm sure yours will be totally fine . With my last hatch my eggs were left alone on I believe it was day 14, for 12+ hours. When I got back they were at 88-89 and I have no idea how long they were at that temp...and this was in a still air. They made it to lockdown.
Where I live it is relatively dry plus I run a wood stove in the house, so that makes it worse. Hmm, I think the vent was open when I got that reading. I have some yellow felt, so maybe i'll do some experimenting.
How much do you all leave the vent open for the first 18 and then for lockdown...
I think that is what I am going to do. I have it running to test it out, the temp was a tad high, so I adjusted it and that is fine. But, I put my hygrometer in there (calibrated) with one channel fully filled and it is only reading 36% humidity and has been sitting for over an hour..? Why so...
Okay that's good, that's what I was thinking of trying. I tried dry hatching with my hatches, and that along with an ill fitting lid on a styrofoam bator just set me up for failure. With both hatches I ended up helping every chick out of the shell as they were so shrinkwrapped and many ended up...
Thanks guys!
I went out and got a small hygrometer today (man did I ever had to goose chase around for the stupid thing, none at 2 different walmarts or pet stores?!!?). What do you all keep your humidity at for the first 18 and at lockdown?
Sorry for all the questions . I just really want to...
Yeah, that's what I thought of doing but wasn't sure if it would skyrocket the humidity or not. Do you put a hygrometer in there to see where it's at? And doing that lasts you all the way through lockdown without having to add more water?
I just got mine in the mail!!
I have a few questions though about the humidity. If you have the entire thing full of eggs, without opening the lid (say during the hatch) how can you see how much water is left and if it needs to be refilled? Or will the water you put in before lockdown be enough...
