Sorry, tifsunkip, I wasn't keeping up with this thread and just saw your post. In draining an abdomen, get a syringe, sterilize it in alcohol, and the gross part, insert it- not too far in- and slowly draw fluid out. There's videos of this process all over. Your gal does look like she's got...
Okay, another question.
Cricket's sister- Ruth, seems to also have a swollen abdomen, but she's not doing the penguin walk, and looks fine. She is laying, but not that frequently. I'm just wondering if we should drain her or what. Don't want to catch it too late.
So, to sum it all up...
Thank you, Wyorp Rock, for posting and helping us out with advice!
I can't believe how crushed I am, though, and it sounds silly because it's just a chicken! But she was a sweetheart, and she was really loved here. I hope she knew that.
Cricket just passed away. I had just given her a bath, and blow dried her, and was trying to get her to eat some Greek Yogurt in her crate. Fortunately, she's gone to a much better place, but we'll miss her all the same.
It's probably not ascites, which is what Cricket has. Here's a link about swollen abdomen issues:

We got our syringe at our vet's office. And yes, Cricket's abdomen felt hard! Like a water balloon completely full. After draining Cricket for the first time, she looked and seemed a lot better, so it does help.
As you probably read, I'm dealing with the same thing. Our hen is all skin and bones, and yet I've been trying to get her to eat expensive and exotic grains like amaranth and she won't eat it!!!!
I've been "force" feeding our hen, putting food on the end of her beak and giving her water...
*Another Update on Cricket*
Not good.... Her comb is almost completely white, with a touch of pink. Also her...droppings... are watery and white. She also isn't eating much, and is losing her appetite for amaranth.
I'm giving her Nutri-Drench to give her a boost, and making sure she...
Okay, slightly better news now!
After being drained, Cricket- the sick hen- got really, (and I mean really!) hungry! That was a good sign, because she hasn't been hungry like that for a long time. She also hasn't been penguin walking as much, and seems to be more comfortable. Last night...
Yes, we were able to drain her some, but then the needle for the syringe broke. (Not when it was in her, thankfully!) We got approx. 1/2 cup of fluid. Her abdomen isn't as tight as before, but there's still fluid there.
She's been "leaking" some fluid from the holes, but again not much...
Oh, no,just brought her outside, and stuff came out of her mouth- yellowish liquid. Also making gurgling noises and seems to have trouble breathing! Help! It seems like...IDK....Hopefully it's not the end for her... Anything we can do for her????
Is it okay to take her outside?
She's just standing in the corner of the dog crate. Seems to be hungry, but isn't drinking water, and still doing the penguin walk.
Okay, so after doing more research, we think she has ascites. My dad tried to "drain" her with a needle, but nothing really came out. She's really going down hill- labored breathing and swollen abdomen. Working on getting a syringe right now. Advice needed! I really don't know what to do.
