Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Penedesenca might be easier to find than Empordanesa in the U.S. I found only 4 total U.S. breeders of rare Breda when I was on the hunt for Breda. Sometimes breeders phase out less popular rare breeds because customer sales demand is for a colorful egg basket rather than to preserve rare...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

You all probably are aware that MyPetChicken.com had Empordanesa hatching eggs but show "out of stock" at the moment. They might be a good contact to find out if they will be offering them again?

@Hangtown Farms PM this person - might be able to direct you - very knowledgeable about Penes/Emps.

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Ow-w-w that's a run of setbacks! On BYC "post your chicken coop pictures here" there is one couple's photos of trees falling and destroying their half-finished new coop, burying their dog so they had to dig her out and bring her into the house, and falling trees ruined their chicken chainlink...

PM Hangtown Farms in Post #133 above for info or references. They have Penes and Emps and might be a good contact.

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Thank you for your kind comments about BYC being interested in saving/breeding the Catalan breeds. BYCers are interested in saving breeds from around the world before all the wonderful breeds disappear within their own countries. There is a growing interest in backyard chickens and specialty...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Your Asturian Painted (Pinta) was invading the ABs space and she was more the aggressor. Looks like the Araucana/Leghorn mix has mellowed the Leghorn's assertiveness in the AB's history - the combs also look downsized. I adore Leghorns but I couldn't mix them in my gentle flock and eventually...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Would you happen to know what breeds were used to create the Arkansas Blues? I understand they aren't a calm bird. I'm curious because from photos it seems the ABs have bluer eggs than any Ameraucana or Araucana photos I've seen. I have a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana that lays a pastel blue egg...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Gosh these disasters happen at the worst time of year! We're looking into a generator for those 5-day blackouts. When I worked at our electric company and power went out for 5 days they made sure all the company's CEOs and District Managers had working lights while the rest of us peon...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Yes, good ventilation and with no drafts. If it gets really cold our hens will huddle in one of our spacious nestboxes (16x16 inches by 2 feet tall). We once found 4 hens in one box!

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

I never had roos but had a very floppy-combed White Leghorn hen. I once used vaseline on her huge comb/wattles and the next day when she took a dust bath the dirt stuck horribly to her greasy head feathers and stained them permanent/ugly until her next molt. My vet suggested using vitamin A...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

So glad your missing pullet returned. No matter how many chickens you have you always worry about the missing ONE - sort of like the Shepherd that had 100 sheep in his flock but searched for the lonely lost one until it was returned to the fold! Sounds like Ichabod was happy too!

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

You mean all the color varieties of Empordanesa/Penedesenca are all carried by the White Empordanesa? So the White throws other colors and the white isn't dominant when crossed with the Penes? You've done your homework!

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Good point about losing egg color but we don't have Spain's blonde Empordanesas in the U.S. Importation being as expensive as it is why not have a blonde project here? If the eggs suffer significantly by the Minorca crossing it was at least worth the attempt?

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

If your camera shading can be trusted the Crele Pene eggs are beautiful chocolate! It's a shame they didn't hatch. My friend had a dozen eggs and only 1 hatched in the 'bator. So frustrating. MyPetChicken had a photo of very dark Empordanesa hatching eggs for sale but I don't trust photos. My...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Welcome to BYC noticed you joined this month! Chickens do have a way of taking over our lives! We're crazy chicken people who name our hens! Probably because as pets they give wonderful fertilizer for the garden, constantly forage for insects, and still reward us w/ eggs and all just for...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Gorgeous! Some of the eggs are to die for! You are so lucky. In your pic I'm not exactly sure which breed layed your darkest chocolate egg. Can you please specify again which breed layed the chocolate? Thanks I appreciate it - Smiles :-) With us & our friends, none of us ever got a really dark...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

You have a beautiful assortment. It's the look we wanted in the egg basket but after re-homing an unpleasant Marans & a White Leg who came out of moult aggressive, we decided pleasant temperaments were better than colorful eggs. The Marans was laying #4 on the color chart sometimes w/ varied...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Meds do seem fine in confinement. However, it's just me - my preference is giving them as much freedom & space as possible because they love it & handle it so well. I like giving them the personal ability to adjust to heat their own way in a free-range environment. I clipped one wing once many...

Empordanesa & Penedesenca - Who has them?

Hello Hangtown: Yes, I bet your Penes do great in runs. Sounds like you have plenty of property to have sufficient space in your runs. I bet one of your runs is the size of just my one little yard LOL! I'm a back yarder so Meds unfortunately would find it cramped to forage after our yard is...
