I used it for years with no problems.

I'm with you. Larger companies tend to have real quality control departments and real animal nutritionists on staff. I purchase King brand because they are large enough to have an animal nutritionist and a laboratory. Many of the smaller mills use stock formulas, and incoming ingredients may not...

I use King from L. A. Hearne Company in King City. They do use a vitamin pre-mix and they do add nutrients that are in short supply in the feedstuffs, but they mix and manufacture their own products. I am currently using their soy and corn free non-GMO feed. A number of smaller companies...

    best brand of chicken feed?

Cheap feed and good feed aren't always the same thing. Avoid the bargain basement product of any manufacturer, usually labelled with something like "money saver" or "Do More" or something similar. There are quite a few feed stores in your area listed in your yellow pages and on Google. Kruse...

    best brand of chicken feed?

I have used both Purina and King Feed. Currently I am using King non-GMO. King was started by Larry Hearne in 1938 and is still owned by the Hearne family. They are now a reasonably large, regional feed provider with a PhD animal nutritionist on staff. I have talked with their animal...

    best brand of chicken feed?

Exactly. And if you find smaller mills that don't use a base from a major feed mill, they are still adding a vitamin/mineral/amino acid "premix." This is actually a necessity, in part because beef scrap and other animal materials are no longer used in most feeds. Not too many years ago it was...

Scratch and Peck does; so does King with their new non GMO Freedom feed. Some feed mills don't even bag their feed - they load it in the truck and fill your grain bin or feed silo with it.

    best brand of chicken feed?

It depends on whether or not your local business makes a quality feed, and offers it in small batches. Some feed mills want a minimum ton order. Most feeds are mass produced, and there are very few family owned businesses like King Feed or Scratch and Peck left. In fact, Scratch and Peck is a...

From what I can tell, Kent/Blue Seal isn't available in California. I can't help you find Kent; but I can help you with some other feeds in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Before visiting any feed dealer, be sure and call ahead. Not all feed dealers carry all lines of feed. First, King...

Were you both depriving them of feed for eight hours overnight? It sounds like they died from either overfeeding or overheating.

The avian specialist veterinarian recommended Purina because it is a very consistent, feed. She referred to it as a high quality feed. I don't think Purina is sponsoring her - most of her practice consists of expensive exotic birds.

    best brand of chicken feed?

Look at the Kent Feeds website; their dealers carry Blue Seal feeds, which include some that don't have GMOs. I personally have never had a problem with Purina; it was one of the brands recommended by the avian specialist veterinarian.

    best brand of chicken feed?

I have used Purina for years with no problems. I have also used the new King Freedom feed which has no GMOs and no soy. Interestingly enough, the specialist bird veterinarian recommends Purina, among other feeds. She considers it a high quality, reliable feed.

Apparently another reason for no animal by-products in chicken feed is concern that this is a route for salmonella exposure. Of course, my birds are quite happy to eat any passing mouse, which probably also exposes them to diseases I don't want to think about. It's amazing that I lived this...

The Omega 3 is available near our California place. It's a few dollars more for a forty pound bag than it is for a fifty pound bag of Layena. For the price difference I am more than happy to keep tossing Swiss Chard, Zucchini, and other garden delectables to the girls.

OK. Here are some very good reasons that pastured poultry/free range flock owners don't want animal by-products in their poultry feeds - Mad Cow and scrapie. Many pastured poultry/free range flock owners also range ruminants at the same time they range poultry and inevitably the ruminants eat...
