I put a dozen legbar eggs into the IncuView a few weeks ago. Three of them quit in the first week (blood rings) and the 9 that went into lockdown all hatched last night! I've had trouble in the past with chicks making it to lockdown and not hatching, or pipping and not zipping, and I believe...
So I think I'm going to end up with 12 out of 18. One early quitter (around Day 14), and 5 that made it to lockdown but haven't hatched. It's Day 21 so I left the 5 in just in case but I'm not hopeful because most of them hatched yesterday and last night.
I'll probably do eggtopsies but I'm...
No special hardware, just a postal scale and a Google Docs spreadsheet. Day 1, 7, 14 and 18 I weigh them all in an egg carton on the scale, punch the numbers into my spreadsheet and try to adjust my humidity so that they lose about 12% of their starting weight by lockdown.
I hear peeping...
Thanks, I hope this is the case. My weight loss ended up spot on this time:
This was last hatch, when a cold spell caused the relative humidity in the house to plummet and they ended up losing too much weight by lockdown:
Well I candled for the last time and locked down this morning. I filled the rings with water, took out the turner, and attached the mesh fan guard. I'm a little concerned because there were a lot of eggs that were so full I couldn't see any movement, I'm hoping I don't have a bunch of late...
Wow I just candled (Day 14) and 17 out of my 18 eggs are going strong. Surprisingly the cracked egg is still developing, it was another egg that looks like an early quitter.
I don't want to jinx it but if they all make it this may be my best hatch yet!
I won't get my hopes too high though...
Well I candled last night (Day 7) and all 18 of my Dominique eggs are developing nicely, even the one I repaired with candle wax. If they all make it, I think I'm going to be overrun with chicks come February 1, lol.
For sure. I've only tried shipped eggs once and even though they were beautifully packed and arrived unbroken, I ended up hatching 1 out of 12. It'll be a while before I try shipped eggs again, if ever.
"Local" by which I mean I picked them up but they traveled 4 hours by car through mountain roads. I tried to be as careful with them as possible, and I did let them rest overnight before setting them.
My current batch are also "local" eggs (3 hours). What can I say, I like road trips. :)
@Leela NH
Here is my hatch rate from last time (first hatch with IncuView), set temp 100.5°F, dry incubation:
Dominique: 5/6
Swedish Flower: 3/6
Cream Legbar: 1/2
I had a total of 5 eggs that had fully formed chicks in them that never pipped internally. My suspicion is they were...
I leave my fan guard off for incubation so more hot air gets to the floor of the incubator, then I put it back on for lockdown. I figure by then the chicks are making their own heat so they could stand to be a degree cooler. It goes on with tiny zip ties so I just got a bag of them and leave...
Well I just set 18 Dominique eggs, one has a light crack but I repaired it with candle wax, we'll see if it hatches.
This will be my second hatch with the IncuView. I filled the inner 2 rings with water to bring the humidity up because it has been super dry here lately. Last time I did a dry...
The top is sturdy clear plastic. The bottom is lighter and is somewhat flexible (not thick and rigid like a Brinsea) but not super flimsy either. The tray inside is very light and bendy but it appears to be reinforced with fiberglass so I don't think it would tear or snap easily. It's easy to...
It does turn a full 180 degrees over the course of 4 turns, it just doesn't do it all in one go. There's an arm that turns in a circle and scoots the tray over a bit each time. I think the idea is just to jostle them to make sure the yolk doesn't stick to one place, and to make the embryo move...
It's the same type of plastic as the styro bators, not sticky. Mine seems to work okay though it's important to note it doesn't turn a full 180 degrees each time, it's more like a quarter turn each hour.
Well in the end, of the eggs that were fertile, I had the following hatch rates:
Dominique: 5/6
Swedish Flower: 3/6
Cream Legbar: 1/2
I had 5 eggs that had fully formed chicks in them that never pipped internally, which is disappointing. When I opened up the eggs, the inner membranes didn't...
Well, here's the scoop: Overnight Friday (Day 19) and throughout Saturday (Day 20) I had 5 Dominiques hatch first then two SFH and one Legbar.
I have 6 eggs left that haven't externally pipped and aren't rocking anymore. I'm starting to worry they won't hatch, which is disappointing because...
