panting yes, they pant all the time and that doesn't bother me, but I have noticed a distinct correlation between temperature and bodily response by my Australorp cross (went temp reaches 42-46). Heat stress symptoms in this one girl becomes a deep throaty gurgling pant that wracks the body and...

Thanks Appps, her gurgling raspy breath eased to a pant and I finally managed to get her to take a few mouth fulls of cold yoghurt. As long as there are no secondary effects from heat stroke I think she made a narrow escape Thank goodness for the cool change (and air conditioning) I'm glad I...

I live in Yass (nth of Canberra) and had similar fears for my girls, mostly my black feathered sussex australorp cross. A colleagues chooks dropped dead from the heat which didnt help my fears. I think I'll try your frozen water bottle trick though. I have been giving them chilled yogurt water...

Dito, undercover. My neighbour gave me a rooster as a welcome to the neighbourhood gift, not keen to see him go but i suspect i could bribe my council into letting me keep him (based on their recent rulings and previous evidence from Australian council corruption investigations).

I notice a few kelpies, collies and healers here, what are your opinions on the best dog breed to have with chooks. I am looking into dog breeds for the new year, I have a small yard but would keen to walk him/her daily so keen to hear peoples opinions.

Lol thats hilarious! I had a pair of lorikeets and the male (we called him romeo) had the same attraction to hands. My cockateil would make love to a stick in front of the mirror, and my chooks are normal. Good luck making the final selection to keep with Ollie ;)

Hi Fellow Ozzies, I'm a new chook to the forum living in Yass Valley (Canberra area). My husband calls me the bird whisperer but after reading through a heap of threads on here I think I have a long way to go to truly live up to that name lol. I love all things animal (land, sea, and air)...
