Hatchery "sex links" are usually a smaller bird, bred specificly for egg laying, not duel purpose. However there are alot of people out there breeding "sex links" using good duel purpose breeds so that they will be able to sell the chicks for more, sexed. I can sell off the mix pullets as layers...
We are pretty used to those temps tho it is a bit early. I lost a couple 3 wk ODs because I didn't think to turn the heat lamp off in the brooder. I am usually finished raising by the time it gets really hot here. The Capons can stay in the garage for a couple days, it is alot cooler in there. I...
Ah, Dh has suggested I check the weather, it was 103 here today, if it is going to stay hot I'm going to be doing this at the kitchen table (Don't tell DH) since I don't think sweat running into my eyes will help steady my hands. LOL I'll have to put the roos some place cooler too.
Opps, sorry, DOWN out of the way, your right. I better remember that this weekend, got my spreaders, so IT"S ON!
OK, Minniechickmama do you have a pic tutorial ready for me?
I always thought they did the fast so you didn't puck and then aspirate. We are doing it for that, but also so that the gut is empty and up out of our way when looking for the testes.
I ordered the retractor off ebay, will take them off food and water when it gets here. Just my luck the oldest batch that were 8 wks the 21 there seems to only be 4 roos. I thought several of the rose combs were roos, but no wattles at all, so I guess I was wrong.
Are thhey maybe getting each other?? That would be very typical of chickens when there is a weaker chicken in the bunch, especially if they are confined in a smaller area.
I just went to ebay and ordered the retractors. I have separated the 8 wk old mutt roos and will cull one and do the "anatomy" class as soon as they get here.
Well we know it's a learning process, like anything else. It is gonna take practice. I'm still waiting for my roos to reveal themselves. I want to keep 2 Black Giant roos for now but most of the rest are mixes and are rose combed so it is harder to tell. I think I'm going to try the straw and...
Well, my chicks are 4 wks now and had intended to dispatch one of the roos for an anatomy class, but the only 2 I can really say for sure are roos are the pure BJGs that I want to keep. The mixes are keeping it under wraps for the moment. I guess after reading more, I don't feel too rushed. I...
You have a small business, right? Me too, mostly eggs, some chicks and spring meat birds. I want to hatch my own replacement layers and I want to replace the CRX. I think the New Hampshire X will be a good dual purpose and I'm willing to do this cause I need them to be able to free range with...
I think you will find alot of good information on a thread "How to caponize a rooster warning grafic pics" the thead was locked due to "Off topic flaming" but you can still read it and there is alot of good learning material there. Lots of Lessons learned and they found several tools that are...
