Never heard about them till now! I want some!!! I do have a feral bee colony that's been thriving in a tree for years. If my bees survive the winter maybe I'll try getting them to raise a new queen, my colony has no drones so she should mate with the feral colony, hopefully!
I don't think my bees are surviving the winter :hu . They haven't filled out all 10 frames, and they have honey stores but almost no brood. :hu I think it's the queen, but I can't find her, I did see a hive beetle. No one is selling queens anymore, and I'll be surprised if they survive.
I think I have a poor quality queen, I should of bought a new queen! I fed the bees, gave them pollen sub, and right now is a major honey flow( at least for the feral bees) there harvesting a lot of pollen and nectar, but I don't think it's a real honey flow for them, I can count how many are...
I started bee keeping this year and would suggest: Homegrown honey bees by Alethea Morrison. Also on release try the marshmallow plug for the queen cage, and spray the bees down with a lot of suger syrup, and feed them year round the first year!
I'm new to bee keeping too, and my bees are varroa mite resistant, so don't know much. Try sprinkling powdered sugar on the bees, half a cup for each deep. Hope this helps
